August 15, 2013

A ten-fold increase in family yearly dental bills and rises in tooth decay would occur if the Williamsport Municipal Water Authority removed fluoride from its water supplies to customer....

Ireland, Thank you for your comments. The most interesting chemical component of the fluoride added to most US water supplies is Arsenic. Our water suppliers should be working to remove all the heavy metals out of supplies ... not adding them to them!!!!

Just one of hundreds of similar informed opinions: Harvard Prof. Daniel M.Merfeld states :"There are," he says, "three indisputable facts with regards to fluoridation: 1) "Fluoridation provides an uncontrolled fluoride dose. 2) "Fluoridation began before research showed that fluoride’s benefits were due to topical application not ingestion. 3) "Fluoridation began before all its side effects were known. When water is fluoridated, the dose is uncontrolled as the amount ingested varies with water intake. Can you imagine your health care professional telling you to just put your prescription drugs in your water, ingest the drugged water when you are thirsty, and go ahead and share your drugged water with others? Of course not! In fact, most European countries do not fluoridate their water, because such mass medication is considered ineffective and unethical." In his detailed analysis, Dr. Merfeld states that fluoridating water appears neither necessar

Fluoride is not an essential element. There is not one biological process that needs fluoride. It does occur naturally in the environment ... so does arsenic, but that doesn't mean it is essential. Infants are protected with breast milk - in case the mother has an over-exposure. Dentists say a fluoride over-exposure results only in a cosmetic defect (dental fluorosis). MD Toxicologist's say it more than that, "it is a bio-marker for over-exposure and to believe that it doesn't effect any other part of the body would be reckless". It is now estimated that up to 40% of kids today have some degree of fluorosis.

"Emergency room visits for serious dental reasons will increase dramatically," Hayes said. "The number of abscessed teeth will increase, which can lead to serious illness that can be life threatening."

Wow....

I believe that when a group resorts to scare tactics like the quote above they un wittingly Lower their credibility...!

I agree BRUSHING and Flossing!! As a Dental Hygientist I must add that DIET is a major issue. In my experience sugar and simple carbs(processed foods based on white flour) are the issue. Soda and sweet sugary drinks of any sort including juice. Educating parents and routine professional care are the key. Fluoride is also important, but is just a part of the solution. It is a natural element only toxic at high levels which is a long explanation.

The same dentist that referenced the poll also did another informal poll of a group of dentist. He said "In my experience, everyone on well water has worse teeth than those that are not ... does anyone else see that same thing?" Hands went up from dentists from Muncy and Jersey Shore. My question is, what population do they have to compare with ... both those towns do not fluoridate. And actually the natural fluoride content in the private wells, surrounding those towns, are a little higher than the water supply in those towns. What Dr. Hayes is saying is that Williamsporters have better teeth than those from Montoursville, Muncy and Jersey Shore.

If fluoride provided such a clear benefit, it should be easy to demonstrate by a study of well-water vs treated water patients.

Since no such study exists to support fluoride, I am suspicious.

Remember, these dentists were educated by the pro-fluoride camp.

Lastly, when someone says we need to "trust our leaders" I become suspicious.

I'd be willing to be that the so called benefits that the dental group claims comes from adding fluoride to our water are just that - so called. I'd bet that the fluoride likely does more harm than good and keeps them in a lucrative business.

My kids were raised on well water without fluoride. They used CREST fluoride toothpaste and grew up with great teeth. Both of my sons own homes with wells, and their teeth are still going strong, as are my grandchildren's teeth.

According to my daughter, BRUSHING and FLOSSING your teeth is what promotes healthy teeth. You also must clean your tongue which is where the worst decay causing germs live. Additionally, I have always cleaned the roof of my mouth, inside cheeks, and gums. And I get a new toothbrush every two months.
