Community service alternative has great potential

August 22, 2013

One in four adults in Lycoming County have not received their high school diplomas. About 6 percent have less than a ninth-grade education. So it figures that literacy is a big problem....

I'm glad to see the local court system beginning to think outside the box and addressing the real issues instead of just using the same old approaches for years that brought nothing but negative results. Now maybe they will also address the alarming increase in illegitimacy rates and how they reflect on crime. Out-of-wedlock births account for 36.8 percent of all births in the United States. In the black community alone it accounts for a staggering 75% of births. These numbers are often ignored even though the relationship they have to crime, education, unemployment, welfare dependency and many other areas can't be denied.

Shaman, you're right, it has nothing to do with race. The preconceived notion that crime rates correlate with race is false. They do however correlate directly with illegitimacy rates and that's why you see the high rates of crimes in black communities. Do the research my friend. The data is out there and being ignored by many.

Shaman - the stats are what they are. Numbers don't lie. Capricorn is correct. All you need to do is drive down a street here and see the numbers of very young girls pushing a stroller and pregnant. Go out and conduct a survey if you don't believe the numbers and demographics in place of implying it is veiled racism. This is a huge problem for an entire ethnic set and society as a whole.

I recently caught up with a friend who works with WIC recipients. The lack of literacy and skills is astounding. She told me of clients who can't even fill out their address on a post card so she can mail them an appointment reminder. Her clients buy cigarettes, and then call for free formula because they don't have money to buy it. They can't budget, or haven't been taught to purchase groceries efficiently, so they're always running out of benefits before the end of the month. The overall lack of life skills is stunning.

Along with the GED requirement, apparently other classes are needed as well. It's really too bad we couldn't get volunteers involved and reach out to people who clearly need help with simple life skills that many of us take for granted.
