Stop this type of driving

August 28, 2013

We sat outside at about 5:30 on recent Friday evening, and we noticed a mini van driving down the alley at about 50 mph! I am handicapped, but this van was heading down our alley with a vengeance i......

I must have hit a nerve; Shamwagon must be a minivan.

Capricorn1, I was responding to SpineyRogue, who I do not believe is the letter writer. I come to this conclusion because his posts are much better written than the letter. I know from experience that the police are poorly trained when it comes to the law. I have also found since my comment that the drivers manual no longer contains this information. Traffic law information has been replaced with seatbelt laws and how to bow to the police when stopped. It's incredible.

Well Mr stopper your last letter was to complain about the bench not being where your girlfriend likes to sit so have you had any luck with that? Because I'm positive you'll get the same results about the speeding as a newspaper blog site is hardly the place to get matters resolved

Either the police need some remedial training or they're to lazy to get out and enforce the law, or maybe both. They must be too focused on abusing the public's rights to bother with little things like public safety. -Enigma

Enigma, give the police a break. Do you actually believe the city police and state police told the letter writer such nonsense? I believe he used that so called "fact" to embellish his point, as he did pointing out he's handicapped.

Make yourself some homemade spike strips. That will slow them down.

Someone else asked and I will, too. What does being handicapped have to do with the subject of your letter, Shawn? Anyone who know you knows that you like to make sure everyone around you is aware that you are handicapped. There are people out there with worse handicaps than you have and they still work a regular job. I really hate people who are just too lazy to work and get classified as handicapped so they can live on my tax dollars. By the way, I also qualify to be handicapped, but I choose to earn my keep until I can no longer get out of bed in the morning!

"I complained about speeders on my street and I was told, if the street is not marked with a speed limit, the speed limit is 55, in the city!!??"

You say that both the WPD and PSP told you that? Any 16 year old kid trying to get a license can tell you that's not true. PA State law sets the maximum speed in an urban district at 35 MPH and in a residential district at 25 MPH. This is easily verified. Either the police need some remedial training or they're to lazy to get out and enforce the law, or maybe both. They must be too focused on abusing the public's rights to bother with little things like public safety.

Interstate 180 is a 55 MPH zone.

You said ANYWHERE...

Shawn,"I am handicapped, but this van was heading down our alley with a vengeance in mind!"

What does being handicapped have to do with how this van was moving, and how do you know what the van had in mind?

Now I know that reckless drivers are a lot more dangerous than bad writers, but they are both really annoying. I'm not sure what I can do to help. I already don't drive like that and I don't have the authority to stop others who do. I could complain about it, but that doesn't ever seem to help. If I were him, I would stay out of the alley and tell the kids to do the same. It's not the ideal answer, but it might be the best answer.

Linhk48 --

I had people racing on my street at night seeing how fast they could get off the stop sign. And when they got to my house they were probably up to 60 MPH. When I talked to the WPD they said all they could do is cite them with reckless driving if they caught them. And they tole me that the legal speed is 55 on any street or road not posted. I checked with the State Police and they told me the same thing--crazy as that was.!!

Woah---those last words 'for speeding' don't belong there. Don't know what I did to put them there but the post should end with the word "permanently"

That's totally ridiculous. Nobody is going to think there is a 55 MPH speed limit anywhere in any city and anybody who believes that or tries to use that as a defense for a speeding ticket or worse should have their drivers license taken away permanently. for speeding

Dude, you are preaching to the Choir. I absolutely agree with you, frankly, I wish they'd put speed bumpbs periodically through EVERY ALLEY IN THE COUNTY! Yep, I'm very serious and you'll find out just how serious I am if the time comes when someone hits my kid because they're flying down the alley when I'm trying to get him in and out of his carseat and take him inside.

I didn't mean to make light of the unsafe driving in the alley in the previous post but couldn't pass up the minivan.

By all means, alleys are very unsafe places to drive in and they should be very careful since there are minimal margins involved. This also goes for the people since they should generally stay to the sidewalks when walking.

I didn't know minivans could go that fast! They and Corollas always seem to be the slow vehicle on the road with a line of cars behind them!
