I urge you all to search for the Associated Press article about schools dropping out of the healthy federal lunch program. They're losing too much money.

Of course, the Obama's children don't have to worry about that when dining in their dining room at Sidwell.

Why did I not know that one letter from someone in any manner suggesting to the WH any tid bit of advice, would bring an assault from the infamous JH?

Gee....how "profound".

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers." - Attributed to Socrates by Plato.

Erik - at least stop being a hypocrite. You know why you are defending "portly". You are trying to blame "liberals" for the destruction of families. What's your excuse. This comes from an outdoor guy like Erik. How is that hand accident working out?

"Yes, a girl just called 911 the other day because there was a big spider in the house......and they sent an officer."

Now that one isn't fair erik...the girl has MS, was in a wheel chair and was terrified of the spider. The report also said it was a poisionous spider.

As Enigma (thank you) pointed out, new games require the player to be up and active. You can really work up a sweat.

The systems now offer training programs for body shape and size as they use a camera to see you, it can create an exercise program just for your shape.......until someone gets hurt and liberals run to the lawyers.

Capricorn:

Define obese.

Now, apply that to children 40 years ago.

What? No real records? A sliding standard for obesity?

Doesn't anyone remember when the federal gov't tried to redefine obesity in a way that would have put the obese label on Tom Cruise?

I think we need to focus our kids on learning how to think for themselves, not call 911 when McDonald's runs out of McNuggets or HBO goes off the air.

Yes, a girl just called 911 the other day because there was a big spider in the house......and they sent an officer.

So after 61 comments, what is the answer to the rising obesity problem amongst our youth? It sounds like some think there is no problem and that kids are no lazier today than they were in the past. If that's true, then why are so many obese? Obviously it's both a proper nutrition issue and lack of physical activity issue. Eat healthier and exercise. And yes, the parents have to set the example. But I stand by my original post that kids do much less physical activity now because of modern technology.

David, Erik is referring to the new games that require the player to get up and move rather than just sit and twiddle their thumbs. It's kind of an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" thing. Kids won't leave the video game controller, so you make them move if they want to play. I see his point. The game makers took things to the next level to sell more games. Now the games involve the mind and the body. Not as good as getting them outside, but better than sitting like a lump.

Chuck, I see the problem here. You think that the kids are being blamed and you want to blame the parents. I'm fine with that, but saying that kids don't have a problem, because it's not their fault doesn't help. If you go back and look at what I've said, you'll see that I didn't blame the kids. I didn't blame anyone. Too many kids are in poor physical condition. This puts them at a disadvantage in life. Blame whoever you want, the fix is to get the kids off their butts. An hour and a half a week of Gym class won't do that. Getting parents to put in the effort to parent their kids is the only answer. Can we agree on that?

This is how blind conservative free marketers are. They live in a state of denal over the innovations due in large part to government R&D and govenment loans.

For those lamenting video games, have you ever played an Xbox Kinect or Wii game?

They have incredible physical games now and as tech improves, the kids will do more.

Again, a problem solved by the free market and not by a gov't program.

If todays adults are concern with the physical activity of children why is it they are not fighting against the gutting of physical education programs in schools.- Mr. Reeder

I agree. We had PE every day. I think now they have it just a couple of days a week. That 1 hr. a day of exercise can make a difference. It may be the only exercise they get.

The complaint is still the same from when I was a kid to today. You should be outside, you should be doing this not that. I swear all adults want to do is complain about kids and what they do or don't do.

They get exercise, it is schedule. Most parents I know are just as idle as their kids. They run here and there but in a car. They spend as much time in front of entertainment consoles as their kids. People don't do things outside it all inside with climate control. Adults don't take vacations because they are afraid they will lose their jobs or it is better to stay home and be available if needed.

Sorry but all the complaints are false assessments. It is not jsut kids who are sendentary it is adults as well. Kids are a reflection of you. Something that a lot of people forget.

The phrase "what's the sense of being stupid if you don't prove it" comes to mind.

Erik- EVERYTHING bad= Liberal Erik-EVERYTHING good= Conservative

Such a "black, or white", "good or bad" way of viewing life. Absolutely no grey areas to deal with. IF this way of thinking is the true conservative philosophy, it is designed for simpletons.
