The mayor and all city employees should be working to bring Williamsports property values up. Higher assessments means more tax dollars, more money for police and firemen, this is a no brainer. Officer Tim Miller lives in a 200,000$ home in Hughesville area. He has no monetary stake in property value in the city. If his home was in Williamsport and his homes value fell because of this class warfare labeling his ordinance is creating, do u think He would be pushing this??it??Maybe we should change the law that city employees need to live in the city? Did the rise in our crime occur after we changed this law?? Pride means a lot in the success of a company. As it does in the success of a city.I am proud to be a Williamsport Landlord.

Those situations do not provide any protection, the harm has already occurred. That spikey is not protection. Protection prevents the harm. As for more current cases, don't need any and there are none, simply because SCOTUS's ruling has never been overturned by another SCOTUS decision. Learn to comprehend rather than just argue for arguing sake. Here is the definition for protection pro·tec·tion noun \pr?-'tek-sh?n: the state of being kept from harm, loss, etc. : the state of being protected

: something that keeps a person or thing from being harmed, lost, etc. : something that protects someone or something

Hiller - could you find a case in say the last decade? Do the police not protect someone every time they respond to a domestic situation? Look at the police call log. Are they not serving the public when they respond to vehicle accidents? Would be interesting to know the number of calls and how many result in arrest.

I'm not real happy with a law that brings big brother into our homes, either. But, I see this as a potential to at least, discourage would be criminals. Try to look at this from a positive perspective. A person with no criminal background or bad rent record has nothing to be concerned about. The ordinance also might pressure slum landlords to clean up their properties, if indeed this is about better selection of tenants.

Actually spike, the Fair Housing Act covers a variety of rentals, not only section 8. It exempts owner-occupied buildings with no more than four units, single-family housing sold or rented without the use of a broker, and housing operated by organizations and private clubs that limit occupancy to members.

I know what the logo states but according to the US Supreme Court decision in Warren v. District of Columbia in 1981, the police do not have the duty to provide protection and services to individuals except under specific assignments. And also I never said there was a case. I do believe a class action could win though in a case that has shown repeated offenses.

Spike, in a perfect world we all could rely on the police for protection, but the reality is, 98% of police work is reactive.

You are not under the Fair Housing Act unless you are receiving Section 8 or other rent subsidy or you are incorporated, As a stand alone landlord you do not need a basis for selecting one applicant over another. Find me one case in Pa. where a stand alone landlord was sued and lost. I think most local landlords are overvaluating themselves if they truly believe anyone wants to live in their property so much that they will hire an attorney to bring a civil suit. Mr. Hiller, check the the police logo, "Protect and Serve".

pass the buck? Its always somebody else's responsiblity, right? I didn't see that anyone as asking the land lord to become cops or to fight crime. However, don't we all -land lords, neighbors, coworkers, etc have a responsiblity to take steps, report crime and stand up when we should so that criminals can't operate, so drugs don't take hold and to asssure crime is help at bay? Or is it others responsiblities?

Cavefelon, you are exactly right and you can even view their docket sheets which lists disposition and any outstanding fines. It is free to anyone that wants criminal information on anyone. It even allows you to look at docket sheets for both magistrate proceedings and the court of common pleas for more serious cases.

I am not a landlord, but it seems to be that if you have a legal name, the prospective landlord could look up that name in the PA Unified Judicial System to see if there are arrests/convictions for drug related activities among other illegal activities, and even civil actions.

If you see someone who has skipped out of paying bill after bill, and has been taken to civil court, and has a laundry list of drug arrests, why rent to them?

"Landlords are not in the business of fighting crime." No one is asking you to fight crime, what many are asking is for you to be a defense against criminal activity in a neighborhood by not renting to crime prone renters. You can do that. It's very easy and very inexpensive. A police officers job is not to protect, it is to arrest after criminal activity. The Fair Housing Acts do not allow you to discriminate based on race, religion, national origin or any other protected category. Criminals are not a protected category. You can decline to rent to those who have a poor credit history, a criminal record and a number of other items. Simply more excuses by a landlord. A neighborhood is hardly habitable if surrounded by raucous neighbors, and it certainly is not if the neighbors perpetrate criminal acts. Rather than stepping up and doing your duty to make the area a safe place, not only for your tenants, but also for all others who live here you'd rather stick your head in the

Recent reporting by the SG has made it very confusing regarding this ordinance. The article the letter writer is referring to was printed last month and made it appear that tenant registration was no longer required. However, recent articles printed since then are still referring to this as a landlord/tenant registration ordinance. I wrote the SG for clarification and they responded stating that tenants will not be required to register, but landlords will still be required to list the tenants occupying their properties when they register.
