Jerry, I like that. People forget that while a vast majority of the trouble makers are renters, the reverse is not true. Most renters are law abiding citizens just like the home and business owners. There's no need or excuse for turning them into second class citizens.

My hats off to the mayor for turning the city's crime problem into a "us against the renters" problem.

Perhaps all city renters could be made to wear a scarlet letter "R" on their shirts for quick identification.

Mim, what you are describing is exactly the initiative the federal government is talking about. Moving people around so poor people are not saturated in one area. I'm sorry but when is it the government's responsibility to plan and create communities that consist of a mix different classes of people? What you want is to take the poor and scatter them through out the county so that your property values go up.

@Capricorn1 - understood :)

But - when it says subsidized, taxpayers are footing part or all of the bill.

And this situation perfectly illustrates the problem we have in our area. Someone rents an apartment, another person comes from another part of the state, there are drugs, guns, whatever in the apartment, and that person's name is not on the lease.

From the WILQ website "As the investigation continues into Monday afternoon’s shooting at the Timberland Estates Apartment complex in the city of Williamsport, police are trying to figure out whether a shooting at the same unit back in June was related. Police report that a 26 year old man from Philadelphia continues recovering from a gunshot injury to the thigh. Following the shooting, a search was made at apartment 9M where the man would occasionally stay with the woman whose name is on the lease and they found three bricks of ******, 7 cellphones and an empty holster. No one has been arrested as of yet in this latest shooting."

According to publichousing dot com, "Timberland apartments is a family low income housing apartment subsidized by the federal governments hud (housing and urban development division). Bobbie, if I'm not mistaken, Timberland is owned by the Michaels Organization and managed by the Interstate Realty Management Company.

To be sure, the plan presented by Councilman Hall and Williamson is just a power grab that will do nothing to resolve the crime problem, but I wouldn't say they are sympathizing with slum-lords. It doesn't take a genius to see that requiring landlords to take responsibility for things they have little control over won't work. It only requires looking at things realistically. The city needs answers, but it's not getting them from the Mayor or council.

Not that I am compairing them with renters but.... Megan's Law violators are also required to register their residence, how well is that working out? I own my home, so obviously the city knows where I live. I do not feel registration will solve the problems in this city. I'm going to go out on a limb here and state that "most" of the problem causers are not on a lease and are transient. Also, if you aren't going to include all rentals, ie. public housing, then this ordinance is hollow.

Erik, I was just pointing out that you used the term liberal, when in fact Campana is a conservative. I used to be a Campana supporter, not because he's a Republican, but because I've known him since the days when we served mass together and I feel he's genuinely a good man. However, lately I'm in total disagreement with many of his decisions. Conservative or liberal, all politicians are capable of poor job performance and incompetence.

Andy, I'm fairly certain that Art was referring to the shootings at the Timberland apartments. If so, then he is corrrect that they're a county housing property and won't be included in Campana's ordinance.

My guess is most of these criminals are not on a lease and are not listed as tenants on one.Another law is not going to serve the purpose it is intended for.It would be very hard for a landlord to control who a tenant's "visitors" are.

"Forget the watch groups and let our police do their job."

Mr. Ebner, you need to do your research on neighborhood watch groups and the success they have had nationwide.

Rather than stop subsidizing criminals, liberals propose more laws. -Erik

Erik, if you are talking about the proposed ordinance, Campana is a conservative.

This rental issue is another great example of liberal stupidity.

Gov't takes money from hardworking citizens and subsidizes housing for criminals.

Rather than stop subsidizing criminals, liberals propose more laws.

Compliance with those laws will not solve the probem, but will surely make rents higher for hardworking citizens.

Mr. Ebner, I'll ask you the same thing that landlords should be asking the mayor, show me the data where this ordinance has been successful in other cities to reduce crime.
