Why bother to conserve?

September 26, 2013

Why is the water authority allowed to charge a minimum water bill? So, if your a person living alone, why bother to conserve? You are going to pay anyway....

Sounds like you can go water your lawn for free or take more baths, up to your minimum volume.

The minimum charge also includes the infrastructure costs, wages for the water authority workers, etc. and everyone pays this.

A single person is going to use less in comparion to say a family of four. Sorry but the letter makes no sense.

Also dripping faucets use more, loose valves in the toilet use more water. Apparently he thinks that by paying a minimum he doesn't need to conserve.

Sorry, but this letter makes perfect sense. It is possible for a single person to use less than 5,000 gallons a quarter-- I've done it. Francine, while you may believe the water charge is a bargain, please remember your sanity charge is based on water usage, therefore, you are also paying for sanity services that were not used as well. The minimum amount a customer will pay per quarter in Williamsport is $77.75.

The minimum is basically just for having the service. How high your bill goes up depends totally on you and your usage. The letter makes no sense he thinks with a minimum he has no desire to conserve. It is not the minimum that prevents him from conserving it is him.

CaveFelem, if our charges are being applied to the infrastructure, why are our rates going up to repair/replace the infrastructure? Poor planning by the authority.

A minimum charge is standard procedure for many delivered services. As one commenter notes, water is cheap, and well worth the charge. It's useless (and dumb)to waste water just to try to get your perceived money's worth because you're already getting it.

"Money's worth" can be examined better if you divide it out to daily cost. For example, it used to bug me how much toilet paper cost, but dividing it by daily wipes plus the obvious convenience, it's just pennies per day and well worth the money.

Garben if you would think before you speak. I do conserve. That is how I am able to use the minimum. I just wanted to know why they have a minimum charge. With all my other utilities the less I use the less I am charged period.
