Too much government

September 30, 2013

Politicians in Williamsport are talking about 'fighting crime' as if it's an election year. Keeping people in fear is a way to control peoples' minds and get them to vote for you....

I'd like to know what those statistics are. My guess is that gun violence is up quite a bit since '90.

This writer has no idea what he is talking about. And even if his imaginations were true, having crime stats similar to the Liberal meccas of Detroit or Philadelphia is not something that comforts me.

We deserve better here. Thanks to civic leaders in the 80's for creating the Philadelphia pipeline that spurred the increase in violent crime here.

Police and prisons are legitinate functions of gov't.

Gov't should not be wasting money on hockey teams.

Liberal meccas huh!

I have to agree with those who posted that the letter has no foundations to stand on.

Crime does not take a holiday nor is less because it is not an election year. There are so many factors that can reduce crime and government action through laws and enforcement is where most civilized societies start.

Build more prisons, hire more police to arrest these people who don't know how to act and put them in prison where they belong and do not let them out anytime soon. Not a hard concept. EXAMPLE- the article about the girl who kicked the pregnant girl IN THE STOMACH and beat the crap out of her around the Timberland apartments, this is what i am talking about, that person has ZERO right to be out in the public, lock her up for a LONG TIME, thats what needs to happen. Big government or not, we cant allow people to act this way.

"Crime in Williamsport isn't any worse than crime in Philly or Detroit."

WHAT??? As long as Williamsport is not the absolute worst city in the country, then it's OK? That's probably not the criteria most people would want to use. I agree with many of the statements in the letter, but the premise is way off. Williamsport does have a crime problem. It is not merely a scare tactic, although some people have taken advantage of that aspect. Of all of the things government spends money on, law enforcement and corrections are two of those that they should spend it on. That's not to say that they don't waste money in those areas, but they are places that are at least legitimate government functions.

This sentence came immediately after he voiced his "expertise" opinion, on here. How do you not see this when you write it?

Leaning- Where is the money going to come from for those police and prisons? Whenever any gov't has any surplus money, it's spent. Cities are bloated with too many administrators and pensions are eating up more and more of the funds that could be used for police and different levels of incarceration. Prison incarceration is too costly per inmate, and add in free healthcare and all the other "perks", i.e. TV, special diets, free education, ect. it's not really punishment anymore. It's turned into, as they say, "three hots and a cot." Also, it's a great place to join gangs and be indoctrinated into violent Islam.

Go to city rating dot come and you will find that the crime index for Williamsport is not only higher than the Pennsylvania average, but also the national average. There are also many other web sites out there that reveal the crime statistics for Williamsport. I was shocked at the level of property crime that occurs here. WAY above the PA and national average. Do your research Mim.

Locking up those that commit victimless crimes such as drug users, failure to pay support, failure to pay fines, etc. serves no purpose and creates nothing more than prison overcrowding which costs tax payers tens of thousands of dollars annually. If Judge Butts is able to implement the Day Reporting Center, you will see the incarceration rate decline, saving tax payers thousands. The city needs to start thinking outside the box when trying to solve the crime and incarceration problems we are facing and I think Judge Butts has a lot of good ideas. The war on drugs has been an epic failure and we can no longer afford it in it's current execution.

I guess (most) people are gonna have to take your word, for that.

If you'd found prison to be so accommodating, why-in-the-world do you choose to run-free, out here, where Life is so-much-more difficult???
