Fight crime silently

October 7, 2013

I submitted a letter last week trying to dispel the myth that Williamsport was a "city under siege" of crime. Some of the criticism I heard about it was warranted....

I didn't ask anyone to be silent dumby. I said politicians don't have to brag about fighting crime. They should just do their job silently. They get old fashioned, reactionary white folk like you all scared so you'll vote for them. They control you with fear. You don't have to hide behind your keyboard and gun.

I just never used the word silent ritty. It's all good. Ppl. Like Reeder try to imply that I'm trying to suppress free-speech. Nothing is further from the truth. I want open debate. And cyber bully, bigot Reeder tries to shout like O'Reilly and argues like a coward. He hides behind keyboards and guns. Cowardly.

"Also, I believe politicians should silently fight crime rather than be so vocal about it." —Shulski

I took that to mean "less talk, more action." A fair point, if it applies.

Shulski, you say the editor inserted the word "silent." What did it originally say?

The editor put that 'silent' thing there. You ppl. Try cyber-bully ppl. By putting words in their mouths they never said. Half you so called 'conservatives', who are actually dumb, radical reactionaries, don't even debate like grown adults. Think for yourself. Stop letting Fox News tell you what to think. Bigoted, angry *******, politics in this town.

I never told anyone to be silent Reeder. I said politicians need to brag less about fighting crime and just do it.

Our police do a good job. However , should we say the level is acceptable ? No. Law enforcement doesn't and either should we. Low crime rates are always a plus to any area. -Spike

Spike, I agree. That's why I have to laugh when I read letters and comments complaining about the Police Chief not living in town and that he has no skin in the game. The police department is structured much like the military, he gets evaluated on his performance going by the crime rates in the city. Just as members of his force are evaluated. Lower crime rates only help the Police Chief and all his officers succeed in their career.

What would be MORE-refreshing would be for YOU to admit it was YOU who'd suggested violent-crime was "unique" to Williamsport...that we ranked, right-UP-there, with the WORST cities!!!!! -Shaman

Wrong, I stated that the overall crime index for Williamsport was above the national average with property crime being particularly high.

"Mr. Shulski, it's refreshing to see someone honest enough to correct their own error publicly. You're correct, crime in Williamsport is just not violent crime and the property crime rate locally is much higher than both the state average and national average." - Capricorn1

Mr. Shulski, it's refreshing to see someone honest enough to correct their own error publicly. You're correct, crime in Williamsport is just not violent crime and the property crime rate locally is much higher than both the state average and national average. All of these crimes require resources to respond to and investigate, and they all affect the citizens of this city.
