What’s the purpose?

October 15, 2013

So now the taxpayers of the city of Williamsport are paying for the mayor to drive around the neighborhoods of Muncy? What exactly is the purpose of this, especially with the price of gas....

BornHere -- You are a bag of hot air. Neither you nor any resident of Plunketts Creek Township has seen what you are claiming. The officer to which you were referring WAS a K-9 handler but hasn't been for nearly two years now and has not had a take-home car since that time.

You have chosen to dig in to save face rather than acknowledge that what you posted -- "The taxpayers are also paying for a city officer who drives a police cruiser home 5 days a week up Rt. 87 between 4 and 5 pm for all to see" -- is false.

Difference between the two of us is I can prove it and have offered you the opportunity to verify it for yourself.

aretesancus..Let me be as clear as I can, not to be rude or anything but I do not have to prove to you or anyone else what I saw.

People that live in Plunketts Creek Township past Slab-town bridge know what I am talking about and have seen this officer just this past year.

I'm sorry that you do not believe me or any of my old neighbors, but it is what it is, end of story have a good night.

@ BornHere -- Let me be as clear as I can because I don't want any confusion on this topic. Plus, I double-checked with the police department:

Absolutely no Williamsport City Police officer has a take-home car (marked or otherwise) that lives up or drives up Route 87. In fact all take-home cars currently are unmarked and driven by police administrators, none of who live, drive or travel on Route 87.

Please provide the name of the officer you saw, or the car number (they all have a number on them, starting in the 60s up to the 90s), or other proof of your claim, to include the very last time you actually saw this occur. I really think you are referring to the K9 handler(s) from a few years back.

Or you could call the police department to confirm that your claim is outdated.

aretesancus...Wrong. The officer is not a K9 handler. I know this because I spoke with him last year at the Creekside store before we moved, I think he stopped to pick up a sub for his dinner and there was no dog in the cruiser.

This repeat letter writer conveniently forgets to mention that her city cop boyfriend also drove a city-owned car using city-owned gas to his home out of the city.

Hypocrite.

@ BornHere -- Wrong. No city police officer drives a cruiser up Route 87 between 4 and 5 p.m. The one who did a few years back was a K9 handler, which means he was on-call to respond 24/7 when needed with the city's dog in the city's car.

I don't see the purpose of a city government especially Williamsport's. They're a bunch of corrupt snake oil salesmen. The mayor just likes to play policeman because he probably has a small pistol in his pocket.

The IRS requires drivers who drive company vehicles to pay tax on home-to-work mileage. I wonder if the mayor and other city officials are reporting this on their 1040's? If not it is tax evasion.

Please correct me if I am in error. I know I had to report it and claim it on my federal taxes when I had a government vehicle and when I worked in private enterprise I had to deduct 10 miles each way if I used my privately-owned-vehicle for business on any workday if I left my home to go to an out-of-town location and return directly to my home.

City council and the controller should definitely look into the use of all city vehicles. I believe there is much abuse.

The mayor cannot afford his CNG car so now we, the taxpayers, have to supply him with a vehicle? I don't think so.

So I guess every business including gas should knock off use of company vehicles ? We are paying for that too in the end game .

I agree that during these tough times, government needs to tighten their belts and make sacrifices. And yes it does start at the lowest level of government. Now, I hope the same people speaking out here also feel the same about the amount of waste and abuse at both the state and federal level. If you are noticing the amount of waste and abuse of tax dollars in small town Williamsport, imagine the amount of waste and abuse of tax dollars statewide and nationwide.

Thanks Pat I didn't know it was that many years, I was only there for 4 years.

I guess he can't afford to purchase his own vehicle and gasoline.

"Why are we paying for our mayor to drive around neighborhoods in Muncy? If he is truly using this car for official business, why was the car parked in the parking lot at Med Express?"

Rhonda, I suggest you bring up your concerns at the next City Council meeting. I am curious how you know where the mayor is driving and parking.
