I hope you are as concerned about parents doing the right things. And if you care so much about this subject, maybe you would look to see how really helpful programs are or not. Certainly in some cases, these programs help, but often the end results are more dependency and not self reliance. Big picture, the huge debts we as a country are amassing will likely gaurentee program custs later while endurring weak economic growth and inflation. Its just math.

The president would rather take food out of the mouths of babies and young children instead of negotiate to reduce some of the federal debt and spending in other categories. He has to keep funneling money back to the rich cronies that got him elected.

Ms. Brown said, "As a single parent, I am very concerned about our disfunctional greedy politicians defunding the program set up for Women, Infants, and Children. It seems they are mostly about guns and being reelected and nothing about Women or Children from their track record in office."

Dear Ms. Brown....Please allow me t be very clear. I don't want to raise your children. Life is full of choices and YOU MADE THEM. YOU-- like millions of other selfish women-- got yourself pregnant without considering the consequences. My wife an I raised our kids without help from a sugar daddy government handout....You should do the same.

One has to appreciate the cruelty of the conservative movement. You have all of these "Christians" in name only who claim to care about the unborn. They scream and fight against abortion but once the child is born they seem to be all about punishing the children (no food, no housing, no heat, no medical care). Just a bunch of mean selfish people we have here. By the way not all children of single parents are born out of wedlock there is this "marriage" thing that has a 50+% divorce rate...

Bob, I have absolutely no problem helping those that need it. But I also believe everyone has the personal responsibility to help themselves and the children they bring into this world. Even if that means working two jobs in order to make ends meet. Fathers are just as much to blame. There are way too many dead beat dads and government is left to financially raise these children. IMO it all starts at home and the values that are taught to our children. I think too often children are raised with the thinking that it is the government's job to provide for them because that's all they know.

Bobglass, let's talk about "cruelty". Cruelty is carelessy popping out kids without a firm, healthy Mom and Dad environment in which to raise them. Cruelty is a boy reaching adulthood without ever having a hero father figure to model his life after; or a girl never knowing how a loving husband is supposed to treat a wife. Cruelty is (look it up) the overwhelming majority of all male inmates coming from non-two biological parent homes.

The Constitution. Can anyone tell me where The Constitution allows the federal government to be a sugar daddy in the first place? Good luck.

The Constitution gives the federal govt only certain limited rights -- and nothing beyond that. Everything else is the States' responsibility for a good reason.

Our Forefathers knew that individual states can manage money far more responsibly than a bloated federal government. They were right.......read the news.

So the rights solution is "not my problem let the kids starve / die / suffer from illness" is that what you are saying? I agree that there are some who will always take advantage of the system but happens rich or poor. If your solution to everything it not my problem then what happens when the right comes for social security and medicare? Can we just say "you were not responsible in saving for retirement andnthusbyou must starve"? Can we say you were not responsible for saving for your medical care and now that you are retired you just need to "go away"? Of course not!

Bobglass, what I'm saying is, "If you pay people to not work, they won't work. If you pay people to make babies, they will make babies".

In other words, Personal responsibility.

Violating the Constitution by allowing the fed to implement social programs instead of the states has resulted in such massive debt that our kids, their kids and their kids will live in a third world Amerika.

THAT, sir, is cruel, selfish, shortsighted and.....disastrous. Kinda like irrespponsibly popping out kids, huh?

WIC is not being funded by the federal government during the shutdown, it has forced states to step in because citizens complained.

Seeing what happened when the EBT system failed the other day was pretty scary wasn't it? Look at how many are at the trough of our tax paying pockets. If we had leadership in our government maybe some jobs would be created and you could take care of yourself, i found ways, you need to find ways also. This government seems to believe they can tax the working and give it all to the "needy", there is not enough of us working and paying taxes to support all of you, do for yourself.

Jeez Chuck, it almost sounds like you are insinuating that women can't be independent and provide for their children. I agree that the father is also responsible, but I have many female friends that would take offense to your opinion that a woman needs a man or Congress to take care of them and their children.

As usual, liberals frame the argument as either we give unconditional, lifetime assistance or we give nothing.

Those are not the choices, you lying liberals!

No conservative opposes temporarily helping those who have fallen on hard times or had a mishap in their family.

It is those who jump from program to program and are never disconnected from the taxpayer's teat that are the problem.

Liberals, of course, will deny such people exist.

Chuck, WIC is fully funded by the federal government, many states including PA are using surpluses from FY 2013 to fund them through October. If the shutdown continues past that, then I'm sure Congress will pass further funding. The use of scare tactics such as Republicans letting people starve because of the shutdown are totally unfounded.

Sullivan, Capricorn and Leaning: I couldn't agree more! I shudder to think how many children that I never even met that I helped to support.

DON'T HAVE BABIES YOU CAN'T OR WON'T BE 100% RESPONSIBLE FOR SUPPORTING YOURSELF!!!!! I am sick of working my butt off and having a huge chunk of what I EARN go to other people so they don't have to WORK and EARN their own way!

Mr. Reeder:

You insult our intelligence.

If you really wanted to hold men responsible for the babies they help create, you would support paternity testing so we can track down those fathers and make them pay.

But liberals oppose anything that might hold the recipient-class accountable for their actions, like drug testing for assistance.
