The difference between Liberals and Conservitives is not in our attitude towards the problem — it’s our attitude towards the solution.

"That is because they are selfish prigs." The selfish ones are the ones who take from those who do, to give to those who won't. This is not about those who can't, this is all about the ones who won't fend for themselves. There is no one on this board who wouldn't give a hand up to those who desperately need and none would deny to those who can't. Get a life!

Pa Welfare Fraud Figures for FY2013

19,217 complaints received 4,161 Field Investigations $14,493,180 saved

Now, this is only for the number of cases that were reported and the fraction that were investigated for one state. Imagine what it is nationwide... now who doesn't think there is fraud on a massive scale?

We can all agree that there are some who scam the system. But we have to be careful when we see someone who 'looks normal' but is on disability. I personally know someone who looks perfectly normal but has had three heart attacks (one where he had to be resuscitated because his heart stopped while waiting for a stress test), two bypass surgeries, and a stroke which left him with pretty severe short term memory loss. After 8 years in the Navy he spent the next 25 years in shipyards he can no longer do physical labor and his short term memory loss has made it impossible to get a job. He's on disability and it's legit. But you wouldn't be able to tell by looking at him.

Welfare reform was enacted in 96. Now welfare is administered by the states and most of the states, including PA, have time limits. PA has a 60 month lifetime limit. AR is only 24 months.

SNAP got an increase from the stimulus but that will end next month. SNAP benefits can be used to purchase all food products, NOT including: beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, or tobacco; any nonfood items; vitamins and medicines; foods that will be eaten in the store; or hot foods. With the start of the EBT cards, there is a payment accuracy of over 96%, the highest in SNAPs' history. Undocumented immigrants cannot use SNAP or welfare.

Since when is it mean or inhumane to expect people to work for a living? And what's this talk about not being able to find a job? Didn't Obama fix the economy? He keeps saying he did. He's created millions of jobs. Go get one of them. Liberals have a problem here. Either they're lying or they're lying. The truth is that Obama is trying to make the economy look better by paying people not to work, and the FED is propping up the stock market to make it look better. Even with that, there are jobs. 3 million jobs go unfilled because people would rather live of others than work. There are also millions of jobs filled by illegals. Send them home and take the jobs. Quit whining to me. Any hard times that are being had are caused by government policies, and liberals support those policies. Unshackle the free market, and stop paying people to loaf and see what happens.

Turn them in on fraud charges then.

Once again, liberals cannot defend the fraud and waste in these programs.

Instead, they accuse those criticizing fraud and waste if wanting to eliminate the entire program.

This is a typical liberal tactic because liberals need to lie in defense of the indefensible.

I thought America was the land of opportunity. Not the land of living off of your neighbors.

I see and know of perfectly healthy people who do not work yet they sit back and collect SSD checks that are more than I can earn. Then others who are very much in need who for some technicality can not get any help. They go to work everyday in pain yet somehow make it through each day.

The American Spirit and pride in ones accomplishments are a thing of the past. Let the government pay my way is the mantra of those who are unwilling to work.

Nobud I agree, the war on poverty was no more of a success than the war on drugs. Not because enough wasn't spent or one side of the aisle doesn't care. But because these programs are extremely mismanaged and the end all cure to fix anything in government is to throw more money at it.

I think what some are seeing as a lack of compassion is really frustration. We who contribute to the pot so that those less fortunate can be fed, clothed and sheltered continually see the abuses and we are fed up with it. We have spent over 15 TRILLION on welfare alone, let alone all the rest of the programs and we have not cured the problem. Maybe we need some better ideas. It has become a generational system of living, something it was never intended to be and something we contributors are tired of funding.

But where is this attitude when it comes to insurance companies who continually raise premiums while reducing benefits? Where is the contempt for the banking system that threw us into the worst recession ever? Where is the outrage with corporations that claim record profit, pay minimal taxes and are heavily subsidized? Where is the disgust with all those companies enjoying ta breaks and huge incentives while your taxes go up? -Sideliner

Of course all these issues that you raise are the result of Republican leadership in your opinion. But I have to ask, what measures did democratic leadership take to tackle these issues the first half of Obama's presidency when they had full control? What a perfect opportunity your leaders had to resolve all these unfair issues. I guess their lobbyist didn't want them taking action either.

Wow! I am just blown away by the compassion for fellow man coming from this thread.

What I find so disheartening is the viciousness an contempt we show for out peers. It's a shame how quick we are to see the worst in others, ie laziness, ignorance, thievery, etc. We kick each other when we're down.

But where is this attitude when it comes to insurance companies who continually raise premiums while reducing benefits? Where is the contempt for the banking system that threw us into the worst recession ever? I don't get how one hand pushes your working poor neighbor into a ditch for getting a hand UP in the form of food stamps, and the other hand defend to the hilt a companies right to dodge taxes and accept its form or government welfare.

Divide and conquer.

There's a big difference between those who CAN'T provide for themselves and those who refuse to. I understand, there are not enough jobs to go around . In this climate, you have to be inventive and be willing to exert some energy. There ARE ways to make money without selling drugs.Create your own opportunity.
