Someone tell me, please, what the following phrase means "one nation under God"---is that not Christian or am I confused? Or -in GOD we trust, what is that? Don't know what anything means anymore but I do know that things used to be a whole simpler when we believed in something bigger than ourselves.

Underwood,

The enlightenment wasn't suave until closer the end of the 1700's. Humanists thinking wants us to believe that it became the "norm" if you will, even among some noted theologians. Upon the Pilgrims first foot on sand, the Supreme God because the prevailing theme within the religious sectors. And, these were not necessarily Christians.

Well, for one, I've lost the freedom to choose for myself whether or not to purchase health insurance, and if I decide to do so, I've lost the freedom to buy a plan that is tailored to my needs, rather than one with maternity, drug rehab, or mental health coverage.

I’m with David on this one. I also see various religious beliefs expressed in the writings of our founders. The ideology they agreed upon was that of the enlightenment, not religion. They had experienced what the enlightenment freed much of the world from - government by autocracy of any kind including religion.

David, Washington did not assure other nations that we are not a Christian nation. It was one line in a peace treaty with a Muslim nation that would not agree to peace with a Christian nation. It was technically not a lie because the country did not have an 'official' religion. The founders may have had differences when it came to religion, but it was mainly a denomination thing. There bigger differences were in theory of government and that is where the compromise happened. Even the founders that were not evangelical Christians, believed that the Christian ethic was the best basis for government and society. I'm not saying that the country should be run as a church, but it certainly was never intended to be entirely secular either.

Enigma, their intent was not unanimous. As you read the Declaration and Constitution as well as letters and other correspondence by and between the Founding Fathers, you find a wide variety of beliefs, agendas, etc. The words they agreed upon, had different meanings for each of the Founding Fathers. Regarding Christianity, why did Washington make the effort to assure other nations that we are not a Christian nation?

Back in the day people came here for a better life and as refugees. Today it is to also make a better life but also to get freebees and set up their own little colonies. Dearborn, Michigan comes to mind; also LA and yes even Miami. But the people in Miami don't want to set up Cuba here- they want to set up Miami in Cuba.

"So, this certainly muddies the waters regarding original intent and interpretation."-DavidBross

No it doesn't. All one needs to do to see what the original intent was is to read the documents written by the founders. Their intent is clear. This country was founded as a Christian nation, founded on Christian principles. People who argue that this is not the case are disingenuous and really just want to obscure the facts in order to eliminate those principles. Even the freedom to not be Christian is a Christian precept. It is true that in some cases the words were added later, but the ideas were there all along.

Maybe this is a letter that needs to be read backwards to make sense, lets see…

“May I suggest that you don't tell people to call you crazy because they will.” Chuck

“.will they because crazy you call to people tell don’t you that suggest I May”

I think it may have worked. It at least did not get any more confusing.

If a liberal politician is honest about their beliefs, they cannot get elected to the White House.

That is why President Obama had to lie about his concern over the debt and deficit.

That is why President Obama had to lie about his dislike for foreign intervention.

That is why President Obama had to lie about his love of free markets.

That is why President Obama had to lie about knowing anything that happens under his management.

If the people knew what President Obama really thought, he would never have been elected in 2008.

But liberals have to lie in order to get elected and to retain their power.....because it is all about power and not serving the people.

"We find out more and more that religious reference in pledges and oaths were added later usually in the mid twentieth century. They were not original." An interesting observation. So, this certainly muddies the waters regarding original intent and interpretation.

"The United States is a very competitive by nature and still is. There is one area that the United States still dominants and that is in innovations. We create and others can only but follow." - Charles M. Reeder

*

Better CHECK that!!! We used to say that, about our manufacturing-base, as WELL...back, when we were a "little"-TOO-FULL of ourselves!!!

I remember the rah-rah sessions management used to employ, in the locker-room (at Bethlehem Steel), back in the early-to-mid-'70s...that "NO ONE" could compete with America's steel-industry!!!!!!

Now...with "conservatives"' inability to see education as a long-term-investment (preferring short-term-profits, instead)..."We create and others can only but follow."...sounds an awful-LOT like the Bethlehem-days, all-over-again.
