Not all renters are criminals

December 4, 2013

I am writing in response to Gretchen Kennedy's letter regarding crime and renters. Contrary to her belief, not all renters, myself included, are criminals....

Micheal you are a criminal for renting the city said so, and now we have to keep tabs on your where-a-bouts so keep checking in with codes to let us know where you are so when there is a crime we can arrest you. Thanks for obeying the law.

I'm sure this will "surprise" you, but...there's a long-tradition of people (in this town) complaining about one-thing-or-another...'cause they've got nothing else going-on, in their Life. It quite-likely started, back when the railroad (and, all the immigrants that worked on/for it), first "came to town", and it's pretty-much gotten to be a "tradition", ever since.

Hmmm... isn't that exactly what you are doing? And you have been known in the past for belittling the people in this town many times. I have a suggestion for you... this is a large country and you have the freedom to go any where. Please exercise that freedom if you are unhappy with the fine folks in this city. You would be sorely missed but I'm sure we could get over it. As a matter of fact, I already am.

Sorry, but a lot of people in this city have not forgotten the Philly pipeline that started in the 80's by Democrat mayor Jesse Bloom. That fiasco funneled convicted criminals and drug addicts from Philadelphia to Williamsport so they could change their lives. Instead of making a new life for themselves, many of them chose to bring their criminal lifestyle here. Evidence of this still happens today. Take note of the shootings that have happened recently and you will notice that seemingly half of the perps and victims have Philadelphia addresses. So excuse us for remembering that and casting a wary eye toward newcomers.

Mr. MacKenzie,

Glad you are in Williamsport; would you be interested in joining a neighborhood watch group. It is a great way to meet new people.

Who encouraged or agreed to letting Philadelphia to send them? Who bought the one way bus ticket? Who greeted them when they got off the bus to get them registered for welfare and to vote? Who took them to the housing?

Maybe several people were involved in the exodus.

Texas, here is a shock. The first two recovery houses were run by locals and neither was named Bloom. There is no "letting" anyone move anywhere. people can move, period. The only possible "letting" situation is if the person is on parole or probation. It's called a transfer and is either County or State, not city. Whatever problems occurred as a result of relocation of some can not be disputed, however making up simplistic "facts" is an inaccurate recount of what actually occurred. You would do well to look at past owners of White Deer. White deer is no longer operated by the same group as in the 80's to 90's.

So sick of people like you passing on innuendoes.

You mean like some keep insisting that Bush is responsible for all of Obama's failures?

Unfortunately, there are many residents who fear "outsiders". We see this with the gas industry workers who get blamed for littering and spreading STDs among "our" women.

Drug dealers who risk felony arrest are not going to comply with a local ordinance. Registration is just "feel-good" legislation.

I agree that not all renters are criminals, but the vast majority of criminals, at least the drug dealers and users, are renters. A lifestyle of habitual criminal activity does not lend itself to home ownership because a criminal has to be able to quickly relocate. That is why the focus is on renters. I don't think this letter was necessary as I don't believe that anyone thinks that all renters are criminals. I do agree with the writers closing point though. This new ordinance will do nothing to curb crime, but it will make the politicians feel better, and isn't that what we all want?

Yeah...for being voluntarily/preferentially-ignorant, and STILL trying to tell everyone (else) "the way things are"...with no such (personal) knowledge to back-up their allusions.

Did you ever think that maybe it's you? After seven years you still feel the need to present yourself as an outsider "fromRI". You and several others on this forum are not shy about telling us how backward this area is and how you, coming from a better place, are so much more sophisticated than we are. I moved here three years ago after 30 years in New York and had no problem assimilating. Maybe that's because I didn't find it necessary to tell everyone that I don't belong here and I don't like it or them. Did you ever stop to think that maybe it's your attitude that makes you unwelcome and not the fact that you're not from around here? Try treating people like equals rather than some under-evolved species and you might find that you are accepted just fine.

Gimme a break. Perpetually-complaining (in this town) was going-on, long-before the '80s. All the '80s did, was give people one-MORE thing to complain-about!!

You "conservatives" really-do need to jettison your martyr-complex. If your preference was to support someone as simple-minded as Bush Jr., that was your choice. To suggest people are perpetually picking-on-you, DUE to your choice, verges on the infantile.

He sacrificed our economy & 4000+ American-servicemen/women, to compensate for his Chickenhawk-status. I'd say he's well-earned his reputation.

Mr. MacKenzie states that Williamsport is not very welcoming to any outsider. He also states that selection of rentals is limited and also limited in quality. Of course he states he moves around a lot but doesn't state where he hails from to begin with. The problem with renters isn't him but others. Not only are there bad renters but there are also bad homeowners. I wonder if he is speaking to landlords on that one.
