"This area was an active participant in the Underground Railroad. We supported "freedom" early on."

I know liberals can come up with some fat-fetched ideas, but is spike2 calling those who supported the underground railroad and freedom RACISTS?????????

Let's be honest. Racism exists, because you are not a racist, does not mean the same does not exist. Racism is not an excuse for anything but is a fact. Most who post are from Pa.. You grew up in the "liberal" northeast. At least acknowledge the attitudes you developed as a child are not the same as those who grew up in some other parts of the country. we define ourselves by the course familiar to us. This area was an active participant in the Underground Railroad. We supported "freedom" early on. The perceptions of grandparent and parents shape our own views.

The Democrats perpetrating the acts think it's perfectly appropriate.

Good letter Phil. But it's too bad for lack of anything helpful or intelligent to ad, people still feel the need to make childish statements, degrading anyone who does not think exactly the way they do. "Ritty" demarcates don't think this is appropriate behavior. "Eric" liberals don't hate America. And "Shaman", well I really don't know what to do with you.

"You mean...BESIDES making every effort to impede minorities' ability to vote??"- Shaman.

Cite a few examples of these efforts, and how they specifically target minorities. Remember, we are talking presently, not 40+ years ago.

Mike Smith “On behalf of all of us readers, thank you Capricorn1 for your constant vigilance, as well as your numerous daily posts on every subject these LTE's bring up………” I think you must have gotten your names confused. We all know that MrSham is the voice of our opinions and the sole person keep the SG in line. Just look at all the ramblings about non-relevant stuff. It is clear to see he is the one keeping everything on the straight and narrow. I propose the SG gives him a raise in his pay.

"Much is said about police, courts and prisons doing their job of protecting us from wrongdoing, but society's customs, traditions, and moral values are what really work to make society safe and pleasant."--LTE

Society customs and traditions without moral values (or against moral values) can still create accepted long-term wrong behavior. Examples are:

slavery,

discrimination,

"you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours",

look out for your own kind - eg. a group in authority (politicians, police, corporate board members, union officials) thinks they are above the law and protect each other,

people feel entitled to something and are above the law or rules or can make their own rules,

abortion,

maiden sacrifice to bring rains to crops,

fertility feasts and temple prostitution to excite the gods to sent a bountiful crop,

I'll do what I want to do and ask for forgiveness later, etc.

A moral compass is still needed.

Yeah...you're wrong, again...as usual.

I require PROOF (whatta "concept", huh?), before KNOWING much of anything.

That ol' fave of "conservatives" (i.e. "Everybody knows..."), has never really worked, for me.

MrShaman- do you ever read the stuff you write? If you do and you really think that way I feel sorry for anyone around you. Faith is not a church, it is your personal relationship with the Creator. Without faith there is no hope, without hope there is no charity for others. You might as well live in a forest with the other wild animals who forage daily for their existence. Faith is what divides us from the animals.

We need to go back further than the present generation and their parents to understand what has happened to society's customs, traditions, and moral values. Murphy Brown having a baby out of wedlock and celebrating it on a popular TV show, making Ebonics a politically acceptable alternative to proper English, affirmative action reducing the need to actually achieve, gangster rap and many other influences have contributed to our present condition.

This isn’t to say that all traditional customs and values should always be continued, but they did act as a deterrent to many things we are experiencing today and what has replaced them is where we need to look for an answer to many of today’s problems.

Once again the Sham man has managed to hi-jack an important topic just so his political drivel can be read. I'm hopeful that only a few people pay any attention to these comments and go with their own thoughts on the letters written and draw their own conclusions from that.

I was the original author of the letter (which is not around anymore) about the media calling it an attempted robbery when it had definite patterns of the knockout game. The fact that the police dept. acknowledged that it could be and warned the public, is what I had wanted to do. Take back your streets Williamsport. Be aware of your surroundings. Everyone with a cell phone is a crime watcher.

It has finally happened. Sham has called himself ignorant. Everything he believes is a matter of faith. It's just that he has faith in the wrong things. He thinks that what he believes is proven fact, but he is sadly mistaken. Even one of his atheist heroes, Richard Dawkins, believes in a creator, he just refuses to call the creator God, or even a god. People like Sham begin with the assumption that there is not god and then use that assumption to prove there is no god, but he refers to the belief in God as ignorance. What a buffoon.

"...And, that's (all-of-a-sudden) gonna force White-wing leadership to change THEIR ways...SERIOUSLY??!!!"- Shaman.

Exactly what are these "ways" that you perceive need changed? Could you mean changing the idea that EVERYONE has equal ability to be self-reliant and prosperous, to the idea that certain segments of society are incapable, and therefore remain "needy", to nourish your self-flattering, "hero" status.
