Even IF we voted for stuff by referendum, we have the Supreme Court there to tell us what we can and can't do.

It'll be interesting to see how this Obamacare plays out. Since the Supreme Court made it a 'tax' and thereby legal they unknowingly created another problem for themselves...... that all Tax Bills must be originated from the House of Representatives and Obamacare originated in the Senate.

Another short-sighted liberal who wants to live under mob rule.

Let's have a referendum on repealing Obamacare right now!

How about a referendum on term limits. That would get Congress's panties in a knot.

Lucy is more correct than wrong. The Constitution lists only certain "Powers" that Congress has, likewise, the President and SCOTUS are limited in powers. Most of the powers these offices claim today have been usurped from the states or from the people. They follow the constitution when it is deemed proper for their goals, but deny it's power when it doesn't fit their agenda and "the people" let them get away with it.

There were very good reasons that the founders did not allow for referendums. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb, voting on what to have for lunch." This quote has been attributed to several people and it's origin is uncertain, but it does illustrate the folly of the referendum. One of the main purposes of the Constitution was to protect the minority from the "tyranny of the majority". One of the reasons our Congress is dysfunctional is that they are trying to do things that the Constitution does not give them the authority to do. We certainly don't need to add the evil of referendum to the evil of an over-reaching government.

Take away power! Take away power!

My question is who will have it(power) then. Corporations, special interest groups, foreign interests.

A referendum! That is just great! Considering less and less people vote not to mention the constant striving by the GOP to block people from voting.

Certain factions did not get their way now they want to punish our representatives for not giving them what they want. It doesn't matter that other people meaning voters wanted it.

How about folks just make their own decisions on these matters. Do we really need Congress or anyone to give us direction on personal matters within a family. Maybe we should give the kids in Congress less complicated tasks. Finger painting perhaps?

The people will have it then. Not to pass referendums, but to make their own choices. You know, choices like what medical insurance to buy, if any, or what gun to buy, or even what food to eat. When Congress thinks they can tell us how to live our lives, they have too much power and need to lose some. When the government thinks they can collect phone records without a warrant or look through library records without a warrant, they have gone too far. When they think they can do door to door searches in Boston they have gone too far. That is precisely why we have a Fourth Amendment, but they just ignore it when it suits them. It used to be the '60s liberals who said "power to the people", but now that they're in charge they say "power to the government". What's wrong with this picture?

"Let's see.....which "power" to give up first and when shall we schedule the vote on it?" You really think THAT will happen? Congress has only worked for itself for a long time and will never relinquish any of it's authority or perks.

How 'bout we MORE-finely "tune" that process, and allow...ONLY THOSE WHO ARE DIRECTLY AFFECTED, by whatever-legislation...to vote on those issues??

Gun-control should be fairly-obvious; i.e. everyone gets to vote.

Regarding abortion & contraception; that should be limited to females, ONLY!!! After all...what good ol' red-blooded, All-American male is gonna "cave" to some woman/women telling males what THEY HAVE TO DO with THEIR (own) bodies??

How do you figure? All of your usual scapegoats, "corporations, special interest groups and foreign interests", only have power because Congress gives it to them. The power in this country resides with the people. The only way anyone else has power is that we give it to them. People like you, who are fooled into thinking that some politician will give you stuff, have given too much power to people who sell it to the highest bidder. That's how corporations and interest groups get power. You aren't even smart enough to see the destruction your liberal ideas have wrought. You have sold your power for government programs that keep people poor and dependent of government, which ensures that people will continue to vote for the power hungry. You vote for people who promise to take your power rather than those who promise to leave it in your hands.

You're gonna have to wake-UP the Class O' 2010 (T-Baggers), first, to direct them towards such labor-"intensive" pursuits.

Liberal ideals huh, try conservative ideals. Conservatives have done more to destroy rights than another ideology in America. They bow to the rich and powerful and stick it to the individuals in this country.

Sorry if us conservatives have morals Reeder. We know that a womans place is in the home. You aren't just "born gay" as you libs say. Being gay is a moral choice and a way to shrug responsibility of having a family. As for workers, we are friendly to businesses so they locate to our areas and provide workers with jobs. You would tax the crap out of them so they go overseas. Also, minorities are just fine as long as they work. Everyone knows that black and latino unemployment is twice what it is for whites. That's because the liberals give them money so they feel entitled and lazy. Take away that money and they will work just as hard as any other American

Do you never tire of showing your ignorance? Most conservative are workers. It is those who don't want to work that elect liberals. Of course by workers what you mean is unions. Do you really think that by forcing people into groups that you give the individual power? You would steal a persons individuality by pigeon-holing them. That's the liberal way. There is no respect for a person, only groups of people. They never talk about individual rights only the rights of groups. Here's a news flash, there are no group rights, only individual rights. Black people don't have rights, but each black person has rights. Women don't have rights, but each woman has rights, and they each have the same rights as anyone else. By making a person no more than a member of a group, you deny them the basic right to individuality.

No everything I said was true. Women belong in the home and minorities would work as much as white people if liberals hadn't been buying there votes with entitlement programs. And being gay is a,moral choice you are not just born that way. Every good, conservative knows these are, true
