Civility needed

December 9, 2013

I have been reading the letters for some time now and have on occasion responded to some of the comments. Very often my thoughts focused more on the tone of peoples remarks then their opinions....

".... I'm sorry that this man's peers don't stand up and take him to task."

I am not so sure that he has peers that post here.

I am curious as to why Mr. Shull feels a need to apologize for another man's statements. That seems a bit odd to me.

RealAmerican is what is more commonly referred to on the internet as a "troll". Just ignore him.

TROLL:"One who purposely and deliberately starts an argument in a manner which attacks others on a forum without in any way listening to the arguments proposed by his or her peers. He will spark of such an argument via the use of ad hominem attacks with no substance or relevance to back them up."

Art, I don't believe Mr Still is apologizing per se. I see his statements as observations of the sorry state of RealAmerican"s comments. No apology is needed, indeed.

Gavin is right. As long as we give him the attention he desires, he will continue to spew his nonsense.

Patrick Shull, first of all I'd like to thank you for a civil letter in light of such hate filled rantings. I was shocked to see a polite and truthful response about that specific letter published. I won't be so polite. This is the hate that divides our country today. We are legal gun loving, retired and active military serving, Liberals in our family. We never cease to be taken aback by the hate coming from the "Christian" right. I say it often and I'll say it again, I've never missed a vote since I was 18 years old. I signed my children up to vote as soon as they turned 18. We serve our country. If you don't vote and you don't serve your country, close your pie hole! Most of the people spewing hate on either side are arm chair political hacks. They don't vote, they've never served.

silverfeather- it's all the rights fault right? Thought so. Take a look at your liberal friends and then respond.I can quote them for you "we are unamerican" " we spit on the poor""we don't honor freedom" "we use rape to make a political point" All said here, the list goes on, the left is no better! Your part of the problem too by calling out the christian right.

Sadly enough there is enough hate to go around from the left and the right. It's a shame we allow political affiliation to bring out the worst in all of us. I guess when our political leaders are setting the example, and we are bombarded with it by talking heads on TV, it will require us to ignore the status quo and bring civility back to our lives.

Well leaningright you should look at some of the comments posted by the right about the left. You have no foot to stand on about any of the left's comments about the right. BTW RealAmerican is no liberal.

mfross- agreed, you dont have to be in the military to serve your country. More people should just get the basics like you stated under their belts first (dad, cargiver, worker, taxpayer, I have added a few) and the US would be an even better place.

While I think the premise of letter is good, pointing a finger at one particular poster doesn't make you look very civil. I agree with Capricorn1 there are many in the political arena who are not very civil.

ummm, John Wayne was a role, not a person. I don't think RealAmerican, whoever he may be, truly believes what he posts. he is just yanking chains by taking certain ideas to the ridiculous.

You did not strike a nerve at all leaningright. I knew exactly who you were focused on in your pathetic post. You just keep displaying how clueless you really are. Love how some on the right do not think they are insulting at all or uncivil in their comments to those on the left. Let alone the letters they submit about the left.

By the way leaningright you imply that RealAmerican is liberal by equating him with liberal comments made of the right.

While the ultimate American is one that wears a uniform, everyday, and is willing to lay down his/her life for this country, it takes others to support them, and love this country for it to work. For one to put the country down because they disagree with a party and the government is un-American. We are ultimately spitting in the faces of the ones who do risk their lives daily. We need to work together and support the country in order for it to continue to be the greatest place on earth to live. Otherwise we are no different than the fence sitting Canadians.

Mr Reeder,Saying what you have said doesnt look very civil either. Your hateful comments about the right are not forgotten and go deep as to why I feel the way I do about Liberals, and do not help your liberal cause. Dont try to stand on some moral high ground here Mr Reeder, you are no better than anybody else.

Gavin, I agree. He purposely over exaggerates opinions of the right to the extreme, in an attempt to make the right look foolish. He's not fooling anyone.
