Let it begin with me

December 15, 2013

Political discourse has always been a high-contact sport played without helmets or padding. Today, it has become more like ultimate fighting with machetes and without rules or referees....

I will take up that challenge, Tim. Merry Christmas to you, too.

Tim, I agree. Just because our "leaders" in Washington act like children, doesn't mean we have to. This is the second letter addressing this issue this week. Perhaps they are on to something.

Does anyone remember the Burr-Hamilton Duel?

Politics have always been vicious.

This nonsense about "civility" is a means to silence one side.

I thought that everyone was all ready polite and considerate anyway. I hold no harsh emotional detachment against anyone.

Can we maybe also use less of the big bucket generalizations of conservative and liberal. Try to at least break it up in categories of fiscal spending/taxation, social, religious, governmental, military, etc. Eg, GWB may have been a military conservative, taxation conservative, religious moderate but was liberal fiscal spending.

Hey Texas - you forgot to include Shaman's two favorite words in your suggestion. One of them has a string with a tag that says Lipton or Tetley. And the other is the name of a pig that was friends with Daffy Duck, that he uses to describe a radio talker. If you include those then you might have something.

I just remember after Rep Gabby Giffords' shooting, the scolding from President Obama about civil discourse.

Then, he violates all that in a subsequent speech.

That is the hypocrisy and doublespeak from politicians that makes us lose faith in the whole system.

Erik - disagreements will come and go and in the end all that will really matter is how we treated each other along the way.

That's because him and his buddies fight dirty with ad hominem arguments every chance they get. They attacked my character every time I brought up evidence they couldn't handle because they hate to lose. So I stooped,to their level. Vince Knauf, the pareagon of 90 pound pencil pushers everywhere is another crybaby who will complain about other people fighting dirty when he's the biggest keyboard warrior out there.

I agree with the letter, yet no matter how many time I treat others the way I would like to be treated I end up getting walked on. That's OK though because I can't be nasty to people.

The political discourse of today is no different than it has been throughout our history. The only difference is that today the news and opinions "travel" faster.

You are nothing more than a fraud and personally you will never gain my respect. As a veteran of the armed forces, I was disgusted when you chose to portray yourself as a Vietnam vet. Respect is earned, and you have earned none.

They already have. Scroll back to the beginning. Civility crashed and burned even faster than I thought it would. Oh well.

Merry Christmas to you too, Chuck, and everyone else.

Tim, you wrote that letter for me. Thank you. I recently hurt, offended, blocked, members of my family on FB because of all that you mention. I am guilty and I am a sinner. I am a Christian. Thank God, my closest relative involved, has forgiven me. Merry Christmas! I will try and do better because of your letter.

rredrose...So will, I.

When I wrote the letter, I was thinking of myself as much anyone else. In any event, I am happy to join you in trying to do better. I am happy your actions had a positive outcome. Merry Christmas to you too.
