Uniting?

December 20, 2013

I got a good laugh from a recent letter saying the President has finally united people but against him. His approval fluctuates as it has for past presidents....

Phil, I agree that past events don't define who we are now. But, those on the receiving end of these past events remember them longer than we do. Just think how long the hostility between the North and South in our country has lasted after Lee surrendered. One thing I realize I haven't made clear is that I have offered the info about the past, not to excuse current actions against us by others. Rather, I have offered it as a way of explanation for what is happening. By looking at things from another's point of view, we are more likely to move past view that says,"They're all like that." That attitude is what I find most obnoxious, arrogant, and unfortunately, quite prevalent in the LTEs and this forum.

Cap, ignoring is good. Ignoring him and reporting the vile comments is even better, and I considered most of his comments yesterday vile. I see they were removed. ;) Sooner or later he'll either get bored or banned.

Fascism as an economic term is defined as private ownership but government control of the means of wealth production. Socialism as an economic term is defined as government ownership and control of the means of wealth production. The Nazis we economic Fascists, but Fascism has been expanded to mean more than just the economic system. I’d say both of you are correct.

Our country’s past warts should be looked at from the perspective of the beliefs at the time. I much prefer to think of them as things we corrected over time.

Sorry, Enigma, Nazis, regardless of their name were fascists. Look it up if you don't believe me.

Erik, you set fascists apart from liberals in your post. Enigma didn't. How do you see that? Also, I was answering Enigma's question about how many innocent citizens were killed to maintain our freedom. Don't blame me for being thorough in my response. Regarding your ledger analogy, you acknowledge that there are two sides. I agree. I think it is a sign of maturity on my part that I can love and admire our country while at the same time acknowledging the warts in our country's history. I find it is those who have a shallow, simplistic view of things are those that can't handle a less than perfect view of what they support. I see that almost everyday in the LTE's and comments on this forum. I read things in the paper and on this forum that I find idiotic, obnoxious, and a sign that not nearly enough people are sterile. However, I do not rant at them and hurl insults at these people. I think your anger gets in the way of your ability to promote the values you value.

"I have always put Nazism in the fascist camp." - DavidBross

Then you would be wrong. NAZI is an abbreviation for National Socialist Party. They were Socialists. All of the killing was based on that. Curiously, many liberals in this country blame the same people that Hitler did for the problems of the country. So you don't equate Communism with Liberalism? Communism and Socialism are just different denominations of the same religion. The belief systems are nearly identical with only minor differences. You can claim that your ideas aren't the same as Communism, but that doesn't make those claims true. In fact, modern Socialists are getting closer and closer to Communism and so-called liberals run the range from one to the other.

David:

Enigma answered the question. And those numbers of dead far outweigh the number killed in our wars, slavery and whatever liberal imagination you can fabricate.

You reveal yourself to be a liberal denier who hates this country.

Maybe you should consider the millions liberated by this nation, or those fed by this nation, or those assisted after natural and manmade disasters.

But you never look at that side of the ledger, you only see the negative.

How many innocent citizens were killed to maintain the freedom in this country? Good question, Enigma. Well, shall we include the Native Americans who fought to maintain the land that they were on first? How about the slaves who died in transport to the US. Or, the slaves who died in captivity here? Perhaps we should include those citizens of Latin American countries, including pre-Castro Cuba, who lived and died in awful conditions because their governments were in the pocket of US corporations? Then there are those who were lynched for their color and the threat that represented to some people. We also have those who died, either in detention or executed, during the repressive regime of the Shah of Iran, whose source of power was the US. All the groups I mentioned died to maintain the standard of living the US desired to maintain.

I do look forward to Erik's response to my question and also to Enigma's post. It should be very interesting. For myself, Enigma, I have always put Nazism in the fascist camp. Also, I don't equate a liberal with a Communist. We will have to differ on that point.

David, You have just lost all credibility when it comes to history. Everyone knows about the atrocities of the NAZI (National Socialists), Soviet Communists, and Chinese Communists. Over 100 million killed. Add to that the lesser know Communist regimes in Cuba, Cambodia and various other small countries in all parts of the world and that number just grows and grows. These numbers don't include those who died in wars, just civilians killed because they didn't agree with the regime. How many innocent citizens were killed to maintain the freedom in this country? Since murdering Socialist like to refer to the atrocities of the Spanish Inquisition, let's look at that. A few thousand were killed in the inquisition, which was not a Christian act, but a perversion of Christianity. All of the killing by liberals aka Communists was in keeping with the precepts of Communism. Maybe you should read some history that wasn't written by a Communist.

I ask again: please list the ways that Pelosi and Read made sure Bush's presidency succeeded. Please tell me about the Canadian and off Broadway movies and plays about the assassination of a sitting President (Bush not Obama). Please tell me about the demonstrators protesting in front of the White House with "kill Bush" placards. Yep, poor President Obama; those mean right-wingers really aren't being fair to him....

It's sad when the best thing you can say about the President is that he's not as bad as some others. But is it even true? While Congress has a low rating, most individual Congressmen and Senators have better approval ratings than Obama. That's why they keep getting reelected. Obama may not be the worst person in the world, but he is in the running for the worst President in the history of the country. But how bad can he be? Rick the socialist would vote for him again. That should tell you all you need to know.

Yeah, no president ever faced an opposition party. How dare someone hold another point of view when a liberal is in power!

President Obama should use the power of government to silence his opposition (oh, he did that already with the IRS) and he should stall every investigation of his alleged crimes (he's doing that too).

You liberal hypocrites are pathetic children. It is no wonder you turn to violence when you get total control, as has been proved by liberals throughout history.

Yes, liberalism has murdered more humans than fascism, monarchies, dictators and any religion!
