The real celebration

December 25, 2013

Christmas is an annual celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a time to include gifts, Christmas music, caroling, and attending a church to thank God for the birth of his son for us mortal....

They seem rather mutually exclusive, don't they?

Merry Christmas, Spike.

"By far, most who support the Tea Party movement do so for the purpose of returning some fiscal sanity and restoring government to its limited functions. Family values are preferred, but nut-job religions views are not welcome."

In the Tea Party they go hand in hand. This is why the Tea party will never prevail with the public.

"To all Atheists.....allow us to enjoy our celebrations....."

How am I preventing you from doing that? What could I possibly do or say that would keep you from enjoying a celebration of the birth of God in human form?

I'm an atheist and I enjoy your celebrations. I love the traditions, the greetings, the caroling, the sermons about love and forgiveness and charity and tolerance; I'm completely in favor of it. I'm in favor of anything that gives people an excuse to treat each other better. Unfortunately, some refuse to take advantage of that opportunity.

"To all Atheists, we Christians do not tell you how to live so become human and allow us to enjoy our celebrations, as I am sure you do as well." —Ida Temple

If this is not a typo, or badly edited, or totally misunderstood, it is nonsense. It is an obvious extreme view and logically false.

As an active individual promoting Tea Party principles and signing your name with "Mansfield Tea Party," you do much harm to our (your?) cause.

Perhaps a letter of clarification is needed, unless you really meant to stay that. If that's the case, you should disassociate from the Tea Party, as low information voters will immediately assign your views to the entire movement, which couldn't be further from the truth.

By far, most who support the Tea Party movement do so for the purpose of returning some fiscal sanity and restoring government to its limited functions. Family values are preferred, but nut-job religions views are not welcome.

" Athiests are some of the most warm, caring and giving people I know."

And, your point is? BTW, it's going to get much warmer for them someday.

Farmer,

I stand corrected, she did say, "become human" perhaps I was giving her the benefit of the doubt.

I don't have very much to say, nearly everyone else said it for me! Nice letter, until the last teenie, weenie bit of HATE! Just like a tea bagger to have to throw in a lil hate on the Lords birthday! Athiests are some of the most warm, caring and giving people I know. They treat people with repsect, kindess and they treat the earth that way as well. I'd like to say that for you and your party Ida, but I'da be wrong! Merry Christmas (Winter Solstice) and look forward to the Vernal Equinox. As of 12/23, the days are getting longer, so smile!

No rmiller, she did not say "act like humans", she said "become human". And I'm sorry to say, I do believe that is truly what she meant.

I read this letter yesterday and was tempted to respond yesterday but after reading the posts decided to wait until today.

I agree with Rick the letter started out with an intent I could agree with then the real intent surfaced at the end.

In the whole of the letter she is admonishing people for loosing the true meaning of Christmas and that we should go back to it. Less consumerism and getting the next best product to make our hearts glad. That we should be responding to the caring for others, the sharing in the joy with others, to find and give goodwill to all.

Then she ruin the whole letter with her last sentence. The only ones who are attacking Christmas are the so called well meaning Christians like Ida.

farmer,

"A beautiful letter, right up to the point that you called our fellow man, not human."

She didn't say they weren't human, she said "act like humans......it's a phrase, but for a spin, it is the only part of the letter to denigrate the writer and the entire premise.

Ida,

You are correct.....so many people who don't believe in Christmas still enjoy the day in some way or another. I always wonder why?

Thank you Ida for your letter. Merry Christmas to you.

David,

From our perspective, and from God's, there are no people in between. All due respect either a person is achild of God or a child of the d e v I l. Much as it pains me to say so, God doesn't mince words about this.

Sham..

get off your tea-bagger wagon and come back to earth....Your constant slamming of this issue makes one wonder if you covet their hopes inside.

Since Ida spoke to Christians and Atheists, she certainly left out a lot of people who aren't in either category.

Shaman we of the Tea Party only want this to be the Christian nation the Founding Fathers intended. The Old Testament brings up many instances of homosexuality being a abomination to God. We don't legislate morality with same-sex marriage laws. If this were really a christian governed nation, business would be shut down on christmas

As opposed to you atheists who try to legislate as much as yours as possible?

Ida, you were doing great until that last paragraph. Though not a Christian, I'll turn the other cheek, its not a day to argue.

Do unto others as you would have it done unto you. Love thy neighbor as thyself.

He who is without sin may cast the first stone.

A man's life consists not in the abundance of things which he possesses.

Peace on Earth, good will toward men.

What's not to like?

My sincerest wishes for a Merry Christmas to you, Ida, and to all else here.
