Sexual assault in the military

March 12, 2014

Every time I read about sexual assault in the military, I wonder to myself, did sexual assault in the military occur before women were integrated into the military? Was it a mistake to integrate......

I didn't want to take the time to read all 62 comments that preceded mine. So, I may repeat something that was already shared. If you really want to know how pervasive rape in the military is, and how it's handled, PBS did a program called "The Invisible War" that was so eye-opening to US Senator Gillibrand, that there's new legislation being introduced to address at least a part of the problem. Here's a quote from an article about it: "Sen. Gillibrand will introduce a bill that enables victims of sexual assault in the military to file their case with a JAG prosecutor, instead of their commanding officers. It would also prevent commanders from changing a verdict, which they currently have the power to do." There was more brought out in the program that even this action will not address. Check PBS's schedule on their website for when it airs next. It just aired March 13, so it will be awhile before it repeats. It was on the program Independent Lens.

What I have not noticed anyone state or say is that these attacks are not just "men on women"..it's men on men, women on women, and ... women on men...It is a crime and should be punished

Raping your fellow service member who should be able to place all their trust in you is NOT being placed in a desperate situation.-Capricorn1

Great point. I believe that our military personnel have enough enemies worldwide. They should be able to feel safe, & at ease amongst each other.-JMHO-Scott

First what you described is not unreasonable it is irrational.

Raping your fellow service member who should be able to place all their trust in you is NOT being placed in a desperate situation. Sorry John, no amount of reasoning comes close to justifying or explaining this type of behavior. Billions of men have gone though life without having the need or desire to sexually assault someone.

All men are not "reasonable" not even in a civilized society.-JohnZook

Tis true!!! My statements arose out of the statements you made: "Human beings fall into the "mammal" category, therefore a male dominated species.". I was merely pointing out what I believed you did not take into account.(BTW, Not all Mammals are dominated by the males.) Rape is Rape, whether male/male, male/female, female/male, or any configuration. Period!!-Scott

As you all may realize, only a small percentage of males aren't "reasonable". We've all witness the unspeakable horrors visited upon the populace by "unreasonable" males, i.e. Oklahoma City, Columbine, 9/11, Aurora, Colorado, up to Sandy Hook. Were these males, not females, reasonable? You people are so proficient at missing the point. I am not an unreasonable man, but put in a desperate situation, I'll become unreasonable real quick. If you really think all males are now reasonable because we're now "civilized", why did these atrocities happen? All men are not "reasonable" not even in a civilized society. If you notice the world around you, it's the males who are doing unspeakable things to other men, women, and children. Men are the biggest threat to civilized society and rape is one of those threats....

JohnZook,

Humans also have a higher ability to "Reason", & a much higher intellect. This needs to be included into your "scenario". I do at times however, from reading some of the hate thrown by some posters here on these boards wonder if animals are not at times, more "civilized". JMHO-Scott

Greg did you not read Change the Heart letter. All they need to do is take Jesus in their heart they won't be violent any more.

Now you are saying that man is from animal so that means there is evolution and not creationism.

Man has the great capacity to rise above his baser instincts and we also pass laws to keep base instincts under control.

OK, I'm going troglodyte on this on. Human beings fall into the "mammal" category, therefore a male dominated species. The males are the aggressors, predators, and the risk takers. You can legislate and set up diversity training all you want but you can't change the ingrained traits. Out of organized society the males will establish themselves as alpha males to control the rest of the group. This is absolutely no excuse to take control of another person in a civilized society but, IN MY VIEW, you can't take the alpha out of the male of the species. And how many times has a man reported being raped by a woman in the military? Are you trying to say a woman never forced herself (would that be consentual on her part?) on a cute, athletic man with a charming personality? I guess men don't have a problem with that.... of course, men can't get pregnant either... that's why you don't rape women!!!!

Sexual assaults in the military is a result of lack of character by the member committing the assault. It may also be an indication of insufficient leadership at the unit level. It is not an indication that women do not belong in the military. I have proudly served with brave women who sacrificed and served with honor. The best ones were lucky enough to be assigned to units where they were "One of the guys". Thank you to all of my Sisters out there for your faithful service!!

This is an internal issue to the military and should be dealt with by the Defense Department, not by the media or politicians, most of whom have no understanding of the duties our military is called to serve.

Rape is not allowed in the military.

This is an enforcement issue.

Nobody

Nobody:"Bottom Line: If women are going to be in the military, and so vastly outnumbered by men, some women WILL assaulted. Human nature, like it or not."

I in no way, shape, or words condone rape. There's no disagreement with me, nor should there be from anyone. Rape is wrong. Period.

But, any one who denies that a 50 to 1 ratio of man to woman doesn't play to the bad in human beings is a fool. Disagree all you want. Humans rape.

I agree with Born on Capricorn1's post at 11:02am.

I do have a problem with this line however; 'Like I said before, the lack of respect for our fellow man is dwindling in society and the military is not immune.'

Alsever, you never heard of the "My Lai Massacre" during 68 in Vietnam? Women that lived in the village were gang raped by US Army soldiers and then killed along with their husbands and children.
