"Global military spending was down in 2012 for the first time since 1998. And for the second year in a row, arms sales from private industry to governments were down as well last year.

Despite the decline in military spending, the business of war remains a good one. The 100 largest arms producers and military services contractors recorded $395 billion in arms sales in 2012. Lockheed Martin, the largest arms seller, alone accounted for $36 billion in such sales during 2012. Based on figures compiled by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), 24/7 Wall St. examined the 10 companies profiting most from war."

"In the World War a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War.

How many of these war millionaires shouldered a rifle? How many of them dug a trench? How many of them knew what it meant to go hungry in a rat-infested dug-out? How many of them spent sleepless, frightened nights, ducking shells and shrapnel and machine gun bullets? How many of them parried a bayonet thrust of an enemy? How many of them were wounded or killed in battle?" - Major General Smedley Butler, USMC - 1933

Renaldus Magnus, Ronald Reagan- "Peace through strength"... we out spent the Soviets which brought down the empire. We need a strong military still today to be the country no one picks on; except now our Leader thinks if we disarm our enemies will like us. Yep. sure is alot of waste, but we have to get that money to our districts for re-election and get those paybacks to our pal Jeff Immelt of GE for those defense contracts and windmills. Pay taxes? What taxes on $5 billion dollars profit, Jeff? In PA it was reported that if on welfare, you can get up to $50,000 worth of benefits a year... I receive from S/S 1175/mo. and don't qualify for anything. Sounds fair to me. Of course, I worked all my life and did my best to improve myself to earn more money... look where it got me.... poor.

I for one, prefer to live in a country that has the best military in the world. Not one of those areas where you really want to be 2nd, or 3rd of 47th.

Yes, the money for the military and money for assistance all come from taxpayers.

Neither should be eliminated as we need a strong military to defend individual liberty and we need assistance for those who fall on hard times.

We are fortunate that we do not have to choose between the two.

I think, if put to a vote, we know who would win.

Question to whomever disagreed with criminals being sent into the military why not? Why are we locking up young men for 10 plus years who have a drug offense such as selling marijuana or lesser offenses that carry 5 plus years. I would bet the re-offenders list would be on the decline.

Money for welfare and money for military come out of the same pockets. You made it sound like because these people chose to join the military their children should be taken care of more so than children whose parents are collecting welfare.

LauriH- No, I've never been on welfare. Always opted to work to provide for my family, often 2 jobs. You missed the point I was trying to make.A comment was made earlier complaining about part of the military budget costs providing housing, medical, food etc.for militaty families/dependents.By the same token there are families on welfare getting the same benefits. I was just trying to make the point that we shouldn't begrudge providing these benefits to military families that are making sacrifices for our country.

Mr. Underwood, thats fine that you don't vote for her, but atleast you have the "human decency" to help a woman in need, I certainly hope someone like my husband is out on the road when "leaningrights" wife or daughter is broke down. Why? He would help.

I'll bet you would do that for all the ladies, says alot about you to not help out a woman. Let me say if I saw George Bush 2 on the side of the road in that senerio, even though I do not like what the man stands for I would not let any human in that situation and not help if I could. I think you have leaned to much to the right you somehow fell off the cliff with that response. Hillary 2016.
