Make city nicer

June 4, 2014

People in Williamsport talk about trash at the basketball hoops as if it's the only littered place in the city. I've seen trash scattered all over establishments on Maynard Street....

RollingWithHusky, Thanks for the first hand account. Sounds pretty discusting but not dangerous. I'm not a big fan of the mayor's latest endeavors, but I like to have the facts straight. I can't understand why he's decided to allow little Timmy Miller to run the city.

enigma, I visited the park on a daily basis walking my dog for a number of years. My husband and I picked up trash and clothing we found in the park. I can tell you from personal experience that the majority of the trash consisted of plastic drink bottles, wrappers and the pieces of clothing. We never encountered drug paraphernalia. We did find diapers under the playground equipment, the odd shoe or flip-flop, hoodies, t-shirts, etc., but not any beer bottles, no needles, etc. Now, on the Memorial bridge, the corner of Memorial ave. and Race st., in the alley between Blaine and Apple... ******s, hypodermics, lots of broken glass, graffiti, etc. Our experiences within the park do not square with what you're reading in the media.

Hey Mike, I think that the big problem with the litter in the park is that much of it was drug paraphernalia. That makes it too hazardous to have just anyone pick it up or to have children playing around. Often things are not as simple as they appear.

"The most important thing is to stop littering."

Most definitely. Carry a trash bag in your vehicle or leave an empty container in the cup holder until you can get to a trash can to deposit it all. Prevention is better than clean up. Take some pride in clean surroundings.
