Born in Picture Rocks on January 8, 1921, she was a daughter of C. Frank and Mayme D. Poust McClain.
Her husband, Thomas L. Springman, died June 1, 1999, after nearly 58 years of marriage.
Together with her husband they owned and operated Springman’s Store in Pennsdale, later to become the Country Store.
She graduated from the former Picture Rocks High School and was a member and officer of the Picture Rocks High School Alumni Association.
She was a charter member of the Pennsdale Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary and belonged to various parents organizations at her children’s schools. Betty was devoted to her family and she supported her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all their endeavors and was a life-long sports fan, especially of the Muncy Indians, the Hughesville Spartans and the Penn State Nittany Lions.
She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Hughesville.
She loved cooking and baking for her family and friends and spending time with her family and extended family and her neighbors in Pennsdale.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas M. and Connie Springman of Muncy; a daughter, Judy Ruth of Pennsdale; four grandchildren, Chester J. Ruth IV, Kristine A. Harris, Amy E. Ruth Swart and Thomas M. Springman II; and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn M. Fithian of Hughesville; and a brother, F. William McClain of Picture Rocks.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James H. McClain, and a sister, Pearl E. Diggan.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 18, at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. G. Edward Corcelius officiating. Burial will follow in Picture Rocks Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
The family will provide the flowers and suggest memorial contributions to any of the following organizations, Christ United Methodist Church, 148 S. Main St., Hughesville, PA 17737; Providence Health System Foundation for Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit, 1001 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport, PA 17701; or a charity of choice.
