Montoursville council retracts its earlier insurance decision

By ALISSA EATON aeaton@sungazette.com
POSTED: December 28, 2007

Montoursville Borough Council voted Thursday to revoke a previous action that provided liability and property insurance for the borough from an outside company.

Originally, council had agreed to quotes from Thomas Insurance Co. of Philadelphia. The agency offered workman’s compensation insurance for $35,774 and property and liability coverage at $27,621.

Penn Group Insurance Services, 372 Broad St., Montoursville, offered corresponding quotes of $33,890 and $32,575.

At that time — around Dec. 17 — council decided to go with Penn Group for workman’s compensation insurance and with Thomas Insurance for the liability insurance.

But, in the week that followed, Thomas Insurance upped its combined quote from $63,395 to $66,395.

David Cooper, a representative from Penn Group, attended Thursday’s meeting and said he was unable to offer the borough only workman’s compensation insurance.

However, he said he was willing to cut half of his commission and lower the combined total for both insurances from $66,465 to $63,465.

With that information, council voted to get both insurances through Penn Group.

Councilwoman Marian Harris was the only one to vote against the motion.

Borough secretary Dennis Holt said he already sent a letter awarding property and liability insurance to the Thomas Group and added that he will send a letter retracting that decision.

“Next year we should start this process sooner so if this problem (quote rate changes) happens again, we will have more time,” President Kathie Hunter said.
