Officials: Student’s box contained marijuana, not a shrunken head

POSTED: January 17, 2008
An odor led to charges against a Lycoming College student who allegedly had marijuana and drug paraphernalia in his dormitory room.

Steven S. Phillips, 21, of Arnold, Md., initially refused to allow college security to search the room on Nov. 17, according to an affidavit by Det. Jean M. Stump.

After summoning other college personnel, security officers searched the room and found a small wooden box, Stump said.

Phillips allegedly told authorities he kept a shrunken head from Africa inside the box.

The box actually contained a small amount of material that tested positive for marijuana, screens and a pipe, Stump said.

He was arraigned on charges of possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia and posted $1,000 bail.

He waived his preliminary hearing to county court to try to reach a plea agreement with the district attorney’s office.
