The 64-year-old Gainesville, Va. woman driving a Lincoln Towncar northbound was pronounced dead at the scene, just south of Pine Run Road, according to state police Tpr. Gary Beadle. Her name is being withheld until next of kin is notified.
A passenger, Rose S. Mazzalupo, 91, of Bradenton, Fla., was responsive after the wreck and was pulled from the vehicle by firefighters, Beadle said.
Driven by ambulance to Williamsport Hospital, Mazzalupo was later flown by helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
A Geisinger nursing supervisor contacted Saturday night said Mazzalupo is listed in serious condition.
Describing the 4:38 p.m. crash, Beadle said, “For unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled off the roadway and went up the dirt embankment, struck the embankment and the vehicle rolled to a final rest, ejecting the driver.”
From where the driver initially lost control of the car to its final rooftop resting place on the road’s east berm, Beadle estimated a distance somewhere between 20 to 30 feet.
Sustaining severe damage, the car was towed from the scene.
It is unknown if the women were wearing seatbelts until further investigation occurs, Beadle said.
