Roundup: Williamsport baseball falls in South Carolina

The Williamsport baseball team dropped its first game of the season on Wednesday, falling to St. Alans, W.V., 15-7, at the Mingo Bay Invitational in South Carolina.

The Millionaires (2-1) used six different pitchers but couldn’t slow a Red Dragon offense that scored five runs each in the third and seventh innings.

Jake Fagnano was 2-for-4 for Williamsport, which returns to the field tonight.

Bald Eagle Area scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Central Mountain in both teams’ Central Penn League baseball opener, 6-5.

• Williamsport’s softball team suffered its third straight one-run or extra-inning loss at the Azalea Invitational, losing 1-0 to Statford, S.C. Stratford had won its pool with a 4-0 record and beat the two-time defending South Carolina state champion in its next game, 3-0. Brittany Peterson pitched well, allowing only a first-inning unearned run and three hits.

• In softball, Central Mountain scored four times in the third inning to pull away from Lewistown in its season opener, 7-1.

• At Lycoming, the Warriors won their fifth straight lacrosse match with an 18-9 win over Richard Stockton in men’s lacrosse. Dan Cannon scored five goals had five assists for the Warriors. Andrew Stoner notched four goals while Ed Williams had three.

At Lock Haven, Kristen Erb extended her consecutive scoreless inning streak to 29 as the Bald Eagles swept a doubleheader from East Stroudsburg, 4-0 and 6-0. Erb pitched 12 innings and allowed five hits, while striking out 12.

Susquehanna rapped out 36 hits in a 13-2, 12-2 doubleheader sweep of Lycoming in Lyco’s home opener.
