Losing the hunt

POSTED: March 28, 2008

This weekend they had the city Easter egg hunt in Brandon Park. My kids were so hyped to go. When we arrived there were a lot of people there and I thought I might not let my kids participate because there was so many people that I didn't want them to get hurt but my eldest begged me to do it. I had heard that my 3-year-old and 5- year-old would be in the same age group so I thought that would be OK since they are old enough to handle themselves with children of their age. Well, when the hunt started the kids ran and so did most of the parents helping their kids get to the eggs to try to get them prizes. My 5-year- old got run over by adults who should have stayed back like myself and some others. He stopped trying to get anything and came to me crying saying that he wanted to go home because people were hitting him. If they have this event again it should be made clear that for certain age groups the parents should not participate. I heard other people making comments on it too.

one would think a parent/older sibling free easter egg hunt would allow the young child to learn success by self effort, and earn self pride by doing it all by myself, even if it was only one golden egg the child brought back to mommy or daddy, the child did it all by his or herself and that would be the learning point of the whole parent/sibling free easter egg hunt. but, since some cant stay behind the ropes, it had ruined it this year for some of the youngsters.. i probably babbled LOL as it is 3 am i should be in bed

Does anyone have any idea what this means ?

And TTT: Your earlier post was removed. And you accuse others of being offensive? Hmmmmm..

No, TwistTheTruth, the Easter Bunny wasn't a liberal. In fact, he/she was apolitical.

Wescott, honey, I thought Lycoming College did a better job of teaching its students how to write well. But then, maybe you're a TEK.

I remember these hunts when i was little in the 60's the parents and older children had to stay behind the ropes.it was a fun time.the parents are loosing sight of the fact that it is supposed to be something fun for the kids, not the parents to show whose better,or to teach they're children to be selfish and "get what you can".our holidays are being ruined.lights stolen from the trees at christmas time from the trees in brandon park.we're only hurting ourselves because the only alternative would be to stop everything.

TTT, you seem like a very angry and bitter person.

No Kalaine, you are wrong again, I think it is the other way around. I am proud of being honest. The truth does not offend me because I live by it.

Therapeas, the way I have seen people in my life indicates to me they were mostly liberal, I have not met a liberal yet who does not lie and who is not selfish, that is my opinion and the way I see it. Like it or not, the truth hurts most of the time.

Wescott...I think that you just might be a bit jealous of our "idiotic attempts at journalist one upmanship".

Clearly, you're doing your best to "one up" the lot of us.

What's wrong...did you also leave the Easter Egg Hunt empty handed?

Could it be that TelltheTruth has finally been banned? As that post was actually not as offensive as his other 100 more offensive posts.

John, actually TTT said something about liberals being the problem in this Easter Egg hunt. I quit reading at that point but it was his usual offensive self. I think something about whiney liberal parents and kids but not as offensive or racist as most of his posts.

Therapeas: I see you responded to TwistTheTruth in your 11:45 AM post. Did the idiot say something that has been removed as innappropriate?

He does that frequently. I've hit the abuse button several times and had his babblings pulled. Everyone should do that !

I am 53 yrs old, lived in Wmspt area all my life, there were Easter Egg Hunts (sponsored by the City) when I was a child. In the early 70's I was the Easter Bunny for about 3 or 4 yrs, then my sisters were the Easter Bunny after I started having my kids. The "Hunts" were held in Brandon Park & Memorial Park and parents were not allowed to participate. They still should not be permitted to; the children cannot enjoy themselves if parents or older siblings are allowed to hunt for eggs also.

TelltheTruth: this has nothing to do with being liberal or conservative. Not every issue or event is politically oriented.

This is about parents going overboard in helping their kids and thus caused more harm than good.

Events should be fun for kids and just for kids and parents need to hold back and let the kids find the eggs or not find the eggs.

The same exact thing happened to me when I was just three in 1960 at Brandon Park. I thought I got over it, but now I gotta go back and see my shrink.

This is why I dread sports in school. The parents are insane. I've watched high school wrestling for yrs with our close friends & watched her sons make it to states & how the mothers were throwing up in between matches, father's getting thrown out, parents picking fights in the stands & screaming out hateful things to these boys. The funniest part was that the kids would be joking around with each other & friendly during warm-ups & most of them were friends outside of the sport. I will have to watch from the car, starting with T ball, or I'll be in jail for dragging parents out by their hair.

I have a spoiled son that will be 4 in a couple months & I would not have taken him to an event like this that is supposed to be fun & is turned into competition. I have no problem with entering him in fishing derby's b/c it's sport, however, in the last one the PARENT fished for the kid & caught the winning fish while the kid played in the stones. My husband was disgusted!! When our son lost focus, my husband reeled in the line & made him start over. If I would've been close enough to see what happened, believe me, I would have defineatly commented something like "Are you proud that you could beat 3yr olds catching stocked fish for plastic toys?"

I've commented on a lot of letters, today. Can you tell I couldn't sleep, this morning? May as well get my shower an hour early and get ready for work. TGIF. I can play sleep catch-up, tonight.

This egg hunt sounds like something new. It has to develop on its own accord. Those running the event probably learned and will make improvements for next year. I think Michelle handled this situation correctly and made valid observations and recommendations.
