MANSFIELD – Diners looking for something a little different will find it at a new restaurant here.

Cast and Crew, a new “improvisational” restaurant opened here March 27.

The restaurant, in the former King Bull Chinese Restaurant at 295 S. Main St, originally was an ice cream store.

The ice cream cone sign on top of the building, there since 1962, was removed in March before new owner Aaron Hulslander opened the restaurant.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Mansfield University, he said, but found his real love in the kitchen.

Hulslander, 31, worked as a cook for the past 12 years, seven of them at Timeless Destination, Wellsboro. He originally is from Tioga, but now lives in Wellsboro with his wife, Sandra, and three daughters.

The “improvisational” part of the restaurant comes in when the diner asks for something that isn’t on the menu.

“If we have the ingredients, we will try to make it,” Hulslander said.

So far, only a few people have asked for the improvised “Off the Cuff” appetizer or the “Dare to Dine” entree, he added.

“ ‘Seize the Pasta’ is pretty popular,” he said, “But, the dessert version (Curtain Call) is by far the safest choice for most people.”

The staff of 12 also will do little skits similar to “Scenes from a Hat” on the “Whose Line is it Anyway” TV show, with ideas pulled from a hat. Many of them play instruments “if it‘s not too busy,” Hulslander said.

Some examples of “scenes” in the hat they may do are “mime in a box” or “finish the joke.”

“We pretty much just try to have a good time with it,” Hulslander said.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Wednesdays.

Cast and Crew also does catering. Call 662-0177 for reservations or catering.
