The fall hunting seasons are just a few months ahead and now is the time to register for a Hunter-Trapper Education courses. Classes are offered throughout the region but generally fill quickly.
There is no fee for the basic HTE course, which generally takes 10 hours to complete over two or more days and are taught by trained volunteers.
Successful completion of a basic HTE class is required by state law to obtain a first-time hunting license, regardless of the participant's age.
In addition to the basic HTE courses, the state Game Commission provides a voluntary bowhunter education course, which focuses on archery hunting ethics, safety and skills, as well as a mandatory cable restraint course, which is required of all trappers who plan to set cable restraints for coyotes and foxes from Jan. 1 to Feb. 22, 2009.
