Republican League plans new building

By R.A. WALKER rwalker@sungazette.com
POSTED: October 7, 2008

The Republican League is planning a new home.

The league meets above the Newberry post office branch on West Fourth Street. Now it wants city approval to build around the corner, on the site of the former Double U Steakhouse at 912 Arch St.

The city's Planning Commission on Monday recommended that City Council approve the organization's land development plan. The plan calls for a single-story structure with the entrance in the rear and no direct access from Arch Street.

Also reviewed and recommended was a land development plan for what once was 1118-1122 Washington Blvd., but now is a vacant lot. Owner George Heim plans to use the site for parking.

In addition, two proposed subdivisions were recommended for council approval.

Tri County Realty plans to create two parcels at 3500 W. Fourth St. and Judy Staccone plans to add two lots at 3234 W. Fourth St.

The Tri County realty property is a vacant site zoned for light manufacturing, but no development plans were listed.
