Local roundup: Spartans put two tandems in doubles semis
As it was a week ago at the district singles tournament, Monday's Girls District 4 Class AA doubles semifinals will be another all-area event.
Hughesville advanced two tandems out of Saturday's preliminary rounds, Kim Rogers and Abby Hess, and Maja Ostojic and Mandy Gardner. Montoursville's Carolyn Meckbach, Loyalsock's Lizzie Martin and Emily Zangara will join them in semifinals that begin at Bloomsburg University at 2 p.m. Monday.
All four tandems were among the top four seeds entering the tournament, though Ostojic and Gardner needed three sets in the quarterfinals to defeat Muncy's Kelsi Chuprinski and Ellen Phillips, who were not one of the tournament's eight seeds.
Fifth-seeded Kazzi Sauers and Emily Knapsack of Montgomery also made the quarterfinals.
Sophia Ziemian finished first and broke a course record with an 18:19 at the Shikellamy Classic Cross Country meet Saturday.
Zimeiman beat former teammate Casey Miller, who had an 18:32 last year. She was followed closely by fellow Green Dragon Kiah Hardcastle who finished in 18:52. Lewisburg won the overall race.
On the boys side, Ian Eisenhauer and Nathan Henderson each finished in the top ten to help propel Jersey Shore to a second-place finish at the Shikellamy Classic. Eisenhauer finished second in 16:35.
Williamsport's Shavonn Caesar (8th, 17:10) and Sullivan County's Logan Hatton (8th, 17:11) both finished in the top ten.
In girls soccer, Montoursville advanced 17-1 and gets a berth next week in the first round of the district playoffs thanks to Tesa McKibben's two goals and an assist.
Montoursville's Brianna Spitler had a goal and two assists and Marissa Spitler had an assist as well. Montgomery got their fourth win of the year with a 5-1 victory over Millville.
Montgomery's Jenn Sabins had a goal and two assists in their win.
In boys soccer, Montoursville didn't fair as well, losing 4-0 to Shikellamy. Kyle Raynes had two penalty kicks for Shikellamy to advance them to 11-5-2 and they handed Montoursville their 15th loss of the season.
The Lycoming women's tennis team competed at the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 18. Two members of the team advanced to the quarterfinals, including South Williamsport native Rebecca Reynolds, who advanced to the quarters of No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 2-6, 10-6 victory over Ardadia's Sarah Lapp.
In women's volleyball, Lycoming placed second in the Hartwick Tournament, which concluded on Saturday. The Lady Warriors defeated Utica to advance to the championship game before falling to St. Lawrence in the final.
Heather Frantz was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance in the tournament.
Penn College was eliminated from the PSUAC playoffs, losing to PSU Schuylkill in five sets, 3-2. Penn College finished the season with an 11-7 record.
The No. 5 ranked Messiah men's soccer team handed Lycoming first Commonwealth Conference loss of the season with a 5-0 shutout on Saturday, Oct. 18, in front of a homecoming crowd of nearly 3,000.
Penn College's men's soccer team stayed undefeated with a 4-0 win over PSU York yesterday, taking the number one seed in the playoffs. Penn College will play host in the semifinals on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The No. 2-ranked Messiah women's soccer team scored nine second-half goals en route to a 12-0 win against the Lady Warriors on Saturday, Oct. 18, in Commonwealth Conference action.
At Reading, Steven Hoffman and Jeff Faherty both fininished in the top ten to help Penn College finished fourth in the team standings at the Albright College cross country invitational. Overall, six Penn College runners finished in the Top 25. On the women's side, Tamara Pavlov was 17th to pace the Wildcats.
Senior Clarissa Correll finished second overall for Mansfield in the women's competition and sophomore Joe Stanek (Ashley/Hanover) second in the men's event at the CTC Cross Country Championship at Richard Stockton College Saturday.
Led by Corell, who finished the 2.76 mile course with a time of 16:33, and sophomore Brenae Edwards, who finished a step behind Correll for third overall, the Mountaineer women finished second in team scoring in the 14 team event. Mansfield's men too third.
