Downtown’s holiday parade marches tonight

November 21, 2008
By R.A. WALKER - rwalker@sungazette.com

Tonight's downtown holiday parade will be so big that city workers were out along West Fourth Street this morning trimming low-hanging tree branches along the parade route to make room for the balloons.

The parade is set to step off at 6:30 from the staging area east of the intersection at West Fourth and Market streets and travel up up Fourth Street through the business district and past City Hall to the Historic District entranceway at Fourth and Elmira streets.

East Fourth Street between Basin and Market streets will be closed to traffic as the parade stages and traffic on Market Street will be temporarily halted as each parade division moves across the intersection.

Organizers reported this week that the parade will take about 90 minutes and there will be a halt in front of the grandstands at City Hall for performances by participating marching bands and other entertainers.

The official reviewing stand will be in front of Otto's bookstore.

The parade will feature a dozen giant inflated balloons designed and made by Bill Smith of "Smith's Special Productions!" Some of the balloons will span 30 to 40 feet in length. Also featured will be an assortment of marchers wearing cartoon-character costumes and floats sponsored by area churches, schools, businesses and clubs.

According to the streets and parks department, barricades will go up late this afternoon at the intersections of West Willow Street and Government Place and Laurel, Court and State streets; East Willow Street at State, East, Academy and Duke streets, and East Edwin and State streets.

Road closing signs will also be placed at West Edwin and Pine Street, West Third and Elmira streets and West Third and William streets.

Fire police volunteers or city police officers will man the intersections at East Fourth Street at Basin and Mulberry streets, and West Fourth at Market, William, Hepburn and Elmira streets.

Entertainment and the downtown tree lighting ceremony will take place after the parade in the parking lot on the southwest corner of the Hepburn-West Fourth Street intersection.
