Susquehanna Health President and CEO Steven P. Johnson recalled the commitment of the late James H. Lamade as a member of the Williamsport Hospital board of managers.

Johnson, speaking Friday during a special ceremony dedicating the cancer unit at Divine Providence Hospital in Lamade's memory, noted his dedication to a job well done.

"Jim taught me to make sure of results," he said.

Lamade's wife, Ann, understood that commitment and dedication, too.

It was Ann who decided to provide a $500,000 gift on behalf of the recently opened cancer center.

"This is quite an occasion," she said, shortly before she officially unveiled the words, James H. Lamade Medical Oncology Suite, now found upon the wall of the entrance to the cancer center.

Her husband died on March 24, 2006.

Both Jim and Ann spent tireless hours with the health system, according to officials. They included Ann's outreach efforts with area youth and patients.

She helped launch the VolunTEEN program, in which young men and women assist patients and staff by doing a variety of activities, such as running errands and answering telephones, talking with or distributing ice water to patients, playing games with nursing home residents, and assisting therapists.

Ann continues to serve on the Williamsport Hospital Auxiliary.

As a board member, Jim was a member of the executive, patient care, nominating, and bylaws committees. He also served as chairman of the finance committee.

In addition, he served on the boards of the Williamsport Hospital Foundation, North Central Pennsylvania Health System and the Susquehanna Health System.

Renovations and expansion to the cancer center - part of the health system's $250 million master facilities plan, Project 2012 - have included overall improved radiation therapy and treatment services.

Dr. Warren L. Robinson, co-medical director of medical oncology, noted that the health system simply outgrew its former cancer area.

"Patients have remarked how much they enjoy this space," he said.

Among the enhanced services are the chemotherapy-infusion room designed to provide natural light and the view of a healing garden, deluxe seating for patients, and a library and conference center for oncology education.

"This has been a huge improvement," Robinson said.
