Doggie Boot Camp begins summer park entertainment

June 11, 2009
By R.A. WALKER rwalker@sungazette.com

Entertainment, recreation and help for pet owners will be available at city parks all summer, courtesy of the Williamsport Recreation Commission and YMCA.

The city has special weekend events scheduled, including free concerts and movies at the Brandon Park bandshell.

The summer park events officially start this weekend with the return of the popular "Doggie Boot Camp" pet obedience series at Brandon Park Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Tennis lessons begin Monday at the Brandon and Memorial Park tennis courts and the summer's first open track meet is set for next Wednesday at the Williamsport Area High School. Additional details about both may be obtained by calling the YMCA on Elmira Street at 323-7134.

The first free Friday night "movie in the park is "Madagascar 2," scheduled to start at dusk on June 19 in front of Brandon Park's Dr. Kenneth Cooper Bandshell and sponsored by ManorCare.

The first "pops concert" at the bandshell will be a performance by the Billtown Brass at 7 p.m. June 28.

The three public pools already are open seven days a week and will remain so into late August except on rain-out days.

The city administration also is sponsoring a series of evening "splash parties" at the Memorial Pool.

The first "splash party" is from 6 to 8 p.m. June 20. Entertainment and refreshments will be provided. There is an admission fee not covered by summer pool passes, but a discount for advance ticket purchases is available.

Ticket options and discount details also are available at the YMCA.
