Roundup: D12 Big Leaguers stay alive at regionalsJuly 24, 2009 - From staff reportsThe District 12 Big League champs remained alive in the regional tournament in Dover, Del., with a 6-0 win over the host team, Delaware District 1. Three pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout and Bobby Donato hit a first-inning solo home run to begin the scoring. Vince Molesky added a pair of hits and pitched two innings of scoreless relief. District 12 kept its hopes alive Wednesday night by winning a pair of games. The Pennsylvania champions defeated Rhode Island, 11-8, and followed with a 13-0 win over New York. District 12 held an 8-3 lead entering the seventh inning against Rhode Island before surrendering five runs. Colin Kelly put the brakes on Rhode Island's rally and in the bottom of the seventh inning, Vince Molesky hit a walk-off three-run home run for the margin of victory. There was no need for drama in the second game against New York. District 12 scored six runs in the second inning and added six more in the sixth, following a single run in the fourth, for an easy shutout victory. Colin Kelly earned his second straight win, pitching five-plus innings. Bobby Donato was 4-for-4 and finished the two games 6-for-7, including combining for the cycle over the two games. West End received solid pitching from Derek Umstead and gave relievers Cody Winder and Garrett Shnyder some breathing room with a three-run sixth inning on its way to a 7-1 win in the opening round of pool play at the Babe Ruth 15-year-old State Tournament in Milroy. Umstead went five innings and allowed just two hits, while striking out five. Winder and Shnyder each pitched a scoreless inning. Warrior Run took advantage of three Montgomery errors and defeated the District 12 champs, 6-2, in the first round of the Section 3 Junior Softball Tournament in Troy.
