Working together to advance the common good is what United Way is all about. So when the opportunity arose to educate non-profit organizations in Lycoming and neighboring counties about available federal stimulus funds, Lycoming County United Way was happy to take the lead and coordinate the effort.
Lycoming County United Way, in conjunction with nearby Union County United Way and Clinton County United Way, will host a special presentation on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Genetti Hotel, 200 W. Fourth St.
"The past year has been a difficult one for our entire community. The uncertainty created since the financial difficulties began last fall has been particularly unsettling in the human service sector. As more individuals are personally affected economically, the need for those seeking social services has increased. Attempting to keep up with the higher demand for their services has put many of these organizations in a precarious position," said Scott N. Lowery, Lycoming County United Way executive director.
The presentation will be conducted by Tony Ross, president of United Way of Pennsylvania and a member of the Pennsylvania Stimulus Oversight Commission. The gubernatorial commission is charged with advising and monitoring commonwealth activity regarding Pennsylvania's portion of the $16 billion federal stimulus. Wednesday, Ross will present information on the Recovery Act, how the funds will be used in Pennsylvania, and funding opportunities for non-profit organizations.
"There has been much speculation about the availability of stimulus funds and we wanted to try to help the area's non-profit organizations get answers to the questions they were asking. Since his appointment to the state's Stimulus Oversight Commission, Tony is in a unique position to provide guidance on the funding process involved," explained Lowery. "Partnering with two neighboring United Ways was a natural fit for us to maximize this outreach effort and reach the most agencies to share Tony's expertise. We are pleased to be able to provide this informational opportunity to the non-profit organizations in northcentral PA."
Ross has been traveling throughout the state and recently visited the Scranton area.
