Loyalsock defeated Middletown 12-1 Thursday in the double elimination state Minor Baseball championships. Loyalsock came out big with a nine-run first inning to put Middletown in a hole.
Michael LaPoint, Ryan Fink and Larry VanStavoren all singled at the top of the lineup to get the game going. Joey Worth had a double that drove in two runs. With two outs and at the bottom of the line up, Patrick Swink hit a double that drove in a runner that was walked.
LaPoint then got up again and hit a two-run home run. VanStavoren doubled and then was driven home by Fink for the ninth run of the inning. Davis Lytle finished the game with a double and 2 RBI and Joey Worth had two doubles in their win as well.
But just as impressive as Loyalsock's hitting was its defense and pitching. Ryan Fink threw a perfect first three innings, facing only nine batters and throwing just 38 pitches through three. Fink gave up only two hits and one run in the fourth inning to get the win. Fink pitched all the way into the sixth inning and got the first out before Worth relieved him after reaching the pitch count to get the final two outs.
Loyalsock plays tonight at 5:30 against Council Rock Newtown, a team which is also 1-0. If Loyalsock defeats Council Rock, it advances to the championship game on Sunday. A loss puts it into the loser's bracket, where it would have to play on Saturday and then again on Sunday.
