Howard T. Knarr Sr.

Howard T. Knarr Sr., 93, of Antes Fort, passed peacefully away at Manor Care on Aug. 8, 2009.

He was born on Sept. 22, 1915, of parents Clarence and Pearl Knarr. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 71 years, Dorothy. Also his son, Howard T. Knarr Jr. of Nisbet and wife Maria, daughter-in-law and their children, Fay Schmoke, Terry Knarr and Michael Knarr.

He was predeceased by his duaghter, Gail Knarr Newvine and survived by son-in-law Benjamin Newvine and their sons, Scott Newvine and David Newvine. He had six great grandchildren. Also surviving family members are sister, Vivian Stinson and brother-in-laws, Charles and Louis Dorwart.

He was the last living person of the original meeting to establish the Antes Fort Volunteer Fire Department, Station No. 31 where he was the first chief, held all offices except secretary and was the oldest member serving for 56 years. He was also a fire police captain and forest fire warden approx. 10 to 12 years.

He served as Supervisor for the Nippenose Township for six years and was on the planning commission for 20 years.

He began welding at the age of 14 and later worked for Piper Aircraft, Curtis Wright, Spencer Heater, Porter Welding, Williamsport Tech and Pullman/Kellogg where he retired in 1979.

He led a Boy Scout troop, umpired Little League games and was a member of the C.C. Camp No. 127. He played baseball for the Bastress and McElhattan teams. He was drafted into the Air Force at Fort Riley, Kansas, during World War II. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a longstanding member of the Antes Fort First United Methodist Church.

Services and interment will be held at the convenience of the family in the Oval Cemetery with his pastor, James E. Weibley officiating.
