Nearly three decades ago, Tom Hunsberger wanted more from the sales companies he found himself working for. He craved a more customer service driven business. In the spirit of wanting more and wanting it his way, Hunsberger decided to go into business for himself.
Thus, Hunsberger Office Supply in Williamsport was born.
"I saw how other people did it. I wanted to do it my own way," Hunsberger said.

The industry was not a foreign concept to Hunsberger, his father runs a business similar to Hunsberger's Newberry business on Third Street. In fact, the type of business is all he has ever known.
"We decided to always be small because customer service is our number one issue. If you call here, you will get a real person to talk to, we have three employees. We have enjoyed the aspect of being a small business," Hunsberger said.
According to Hunsberger, the costs of the chain office supply retailers may be slightly lower than his costs.
However, in the long run, doing business with his company may be more cost effective.
Some issues that may make a difference are duration of waiting for service, effective assistance with problems, returns and access to additional information.
Hunsberger also sells office furniture in which he holds major contracts with office furniture and design.
"I think what we have is true customer service. You can call and say "I don't know what type of folder I need."
"We'll try and work you through it. If we can't, we might send it to you to make sure it is right before we do it (order it)," Hunsberger said.
Hunsberger also offers online ordering like the big chains do.
However, if changes needed to be made, individuals may call up the office and receive the changes hassle free, according to Hunsberger.
"In order to stay small and effective, we need the technology but also the personnel. We have the right mix. People think because we are small, that we don't have the same services as the bigger chains, but we do," Hunsberger said.
According to Hunsberger, individuals will always speak to a live person. Potential customers are never woven through a series of automated messages. It is part of what the company stands for.
The dedicated staff are always on demand for any questions that may arise and are happy to look into all inquiries.
"If there is an issue, we are going to deal with it. No matter what the issue is, if we don't know the answer, we will find the answer for you. Just give us the opportunity," Hunsberger said.
