Local roundup: Montgomery tennis remains undefeated

Already having built a solid tennis tradition, Montgomery might be having its best season yet. The undefeated Red Raiders beat Hughesville for the first time in program history Saturday, winning 3-2 while improving to 8-0. The Red Raiders built a 3-0 lead as Kazzie Sauers and Emily Gherghel won in singles while the doubles team of Hannah Lovell and Loryn Kennedy also was victorious.

Lewisburg received a lift from its two doubles teams as the Green Dragons defeated Milton, 3-2. Lainey Price and Maddie Hussar, and Elise Buffinton and Alice Meng each won it straight sets.

In girls soccer, Montoursville received goals from three different players but had to settle for a 3-3 tie with Milton in the two teams second meeting of the season.

Brianna Spitler, Lana Spitler and Leah Winner all scored for the Warriors, while Caitlin Landis scored twice for the Black Panthers.

Warrior Run's Mackenzie Stover had a hat trick and the Defenders (4-0) remained unbeaten with a 6-0 win over Montgomery.

Hughesville's Dana Shearer finished with three goals and the Spartans defeated Bloomsburg, 6-1.

In boys soccer, Southern Columbia's Zach Long scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Loyalsock in a game featuring two unbeatens. The loss dropps the Lancers to 6-1 while Southern Columbia improves to 7-0.

Logan Yerger scored twice and Marco Doder added a goal and an assist as South Williamsport built on its strong start to the season, defeating Bloomsburg, 3-1. The Mounties (5-1) outshot Bloomsburg, 20-8.

Jordan Brunelle scored three times, helping Troy blank Liberty, 3-0.

In field hockey, Muncy earned its first win of the season, defeating Notre Dame High School, 2-1, in the third-place game of the Muncy Tournament. The Indians dropped their first game, 3-2, to Huntingdon, which defeated Southern Huntingdon, 2-1, to win the championship.

In cross country, Sullivan County's Logan Hatton placed second at the Mansfield Invitational and led the Griffins to the team title. The Sullivan County girls placed second and was led by Jade Heisman's third-place finish.

In college tennis, Montgomery graduate Shayna Heintzelman returned to the area and led Lebanon Valley to an 8-1 win over Lycoming. The Dutchmen, the defending Commonwealth Conference champions, swept the doubles matches and won five of the six singles.

Heintzelman won at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-2.

In women's soccer, Lock Haven's Arielle Gordon scored twice as the Lady Eagles defeated Edinboro, 2-1. Williamsport graduate Caitlyn Slattery had an assist for Lock Haven (2-5, 1-5 PSAC-West).

Junior Victoria Michael, a Hughesville graduate, put Lycoming on the board seven minutes into the match but the Warriors fell to Marywood, 2-1.

Marywood broke the tie 29 seconds into the extra period.

In men's soccer, freshman Jimmy Deasel scored two goals in Lycoming's 5-0 win over Waynesburg.

In women's volleyball, Susquehanna defeated Lycoming, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15 and 25-16).

Lock?Haven swept Slippery Rock and IUP. Xuan Gao finished with 24 kills and Haley Gribler 20 in the two matches.

In college sprint football, freshman Kody Plank passed for 209 yards and a touchdown and the Mansfield defense held Princeton scoreless in a season opening 33-0 t Karl Van Norman Field.

In college field hockey, Mansfield freshman Kristyn Grunza tied the game with a goal with five minutes left, but No. 4 Kutztown scored the game-winner 12 minutes into overtime.

Mansfield (2-6) lost by a goal for the third time in four games.

In college cross country, both the Lock men's and women's teams won 6-K team titles at the Mansfield Mountaineer Flatland Invitational. The LHU men also placed second in the 10-K race.

The Lock Haven men swept the top four positions in the 6-K race led by Nick Hilton, who finished in 18 minutes, 34 seconds.

Lindsay Topper was the Lady Eagles top finisher, placing fifth as Lock Haven put three runners in the first eight positions.

Mansfield's Brenae Edwards placed third in 21:44.60.

Penn College women's and men's cross country teams both finished first at PSU-Mont Alto. On the women's side, Tamara Pavlov took second, Holly Shuster third and Abigail Schuler fourth. On the men's side, Penn College had a 1-2 finish with Mark Cordiero taking first and Jeff Faherty right behind him at second.
