March 1, 2010
By SHAWNA T. TURNER - sturner@sungazette.com

In 1971, Jay Hilsher, who was the head of the printing department at the Williamsport Community College, started his own business, Hilsher Graphics, 1626 Riverside Drive, according to Sally Hilsher, manager of the business.

Jay Hilsher hailed from a family of printers. That tradition would carry over to his wife, Sally Hilsher and son, John Hilsher.

"It is a family business. I am a fourth generation printer," John Hilsher said.

The Hilsher Graphics consistency, attention to detail and loyalty to timeliness is what sets them apart from others. Jen Swales, receptionist, attention to detail is seen as she looks over paperwork.

Some services offered at the company are electronic prepress, printing, mailing, bindery, dye cutting and specialty cutting, just to name a few, according to Sally Hilsher.

Even though technological equipment is in place to minimize mistakes, every product that leaves the doors of Hilsher Graphics is double checked.

"We are one of the few printers that double checks everything. We proofread everything and customers are appreciative of that," Sally Hilsher said.

Excellent customer service is one reason that the business fares well in the Williamsport industry.

Some ways customer service is at its best are by providing complete project engineering which saves time and money; alerting the customer of potential challenges in production before they happen; detail-oriented people with deep experience in printing, strong knowledge of paper, inks, construction design and complex projects; a system designed for meeting deadlines and budgets and a relationship style of service that will add value to all printing needs, according to Hilsher Graphics.

Our consistency, attention to detail and timely delivery are some things that make us successful, according to John Hilsher.

There are 15 employed at the company with an average number of 15 years experience for their workers.

"Our employees have been here anywhere from two years to 30 years. All of our workers are experienced. The pressman has been here foe 27 years. He came here right from the military, looking for a painting job. Most of our employees have grown with the company," Sally Hilsher said.

Because of the digital age, there is no minimum order.

This advancement has opened a variety of products to small businesses, according to Sally Hilsher.

The company also prides itself on green business practices.

"We have taken a step ahead of the game with the green initiative. 10 years ago, we were approaching it with environmentally friendly inks and recycled paper, among other things. We don't publicize it, just practice it," John Hilsher said.

The company's hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Individuals interested in contacting the business may do so by calling 326-9159 or by accessing the Web site at www.hilsherprinting.com.
