Clearly, we like our recreation in this area.
That's why building a river walk along the Susquehanna River on both the north and south sides at the Williamsport-SouthWilliamsport border was such a priority for many years.
Now that the Susquehanna River Walk is completed, the recreation popularity is coming to life in the form of hundreds of bikers, walkers and runners.
The only blight on this success story is haphazard parking that is going on at the Maynard Street access ramps to and from Interstate 180.
Parking in the area of these ramps is not only a violation of the state vehicle code, it is unsafe as well. People parking in the access ramp areas are backing out into traffic.
While parking near the river walk entrances is not plentiful right now, that will change dramatically in the next year with two developments. The Church Street Transportation Center parking garage will provide plenty of parking on the city side of the riverwalk. And an extension of the walk to the South Williamsport's recreation park will connect the trail to another major parking area.
In the meantime, let's not ruin a good thing with careless parking that could lead to problems.
The river walk is too pretty of a jewel to be visited by tragedy.
