MONTGOMERY - Residents enjoying a Memorial Day weekend fire failed to extinguish it before they left their 4967 Route 15 home for the day. Flames later damaged a porch deck, Clinton Township assistant fire Chief Dennis Miller said.
Atop a deck adjacent to the rear of the home, people were around the flames within a containment ring Miller said was propped inches off the porch floor.
Residents reportedly believed the fire was out when they departed.
No one was home when a neighbor reported at 2:15 p.m. the small deck burning, which Miller said was built about a foot off the ground in the township.
Miller estimated damage at about $500.
No injuries were reported and the home was unharmed.
