The South Williamsport Area School Board on Monday approved co-funding an update to the Rommelt Elementary School's library book system.

Superintendent Thomas C. Farr told board members much of the material and books available to students in the library's system now are badly dated.

Installing the new collection is projected to cost $21,500, according to Dwight Woodley, elementary school principal.

Woodley reported the district's Parent Teacher Organization has offered to contribute $10,000 toward the project, and Susquehanna Bank will provide a grant of up to $5,000.

With monies available in the 2009-10 budget, Farr recommended the board approve a district allocation of $6,500 to cover the remainder of the cost.

The board approved the motion on a 6-0 vote. Board members Samuel Burch and President John Engel were absent.

Woodley said once he places the order, the books should arrive by the middle of August.

In other business, Farr said there have not been any updates - nor have there been since April - on the status of the state's 2010-11 budget, which has a deadline of June 30.

The board is expected to vote on its final 2010-11 budget during a June 28 meeting, though should any reports from the state indicate the district will receive state funding less than what is projected before then, a special meeting will take place.

Farr said the next meeting also will include interviewing candidates to replace board member Gary Lowe, who died last month.

The board also accepted the resignation of Dave Wonderlich, head track coach, and Kevin Eck, assistant track coach.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. June 28 at the Rommelt Building, 515 W. Central Ave.
