Montoursville's only year-round ice cream shop recently opened.
Brothers Bill, owner, and Brian Fredo, vested partner, opened Montoursville Creamery, 342 Broad St., Montoursville on May 2.
Bill, a local business owner who owns and operates Two Boys from Italy and Belles Spring Golf Club, purchased the local Hershey's business on Loyalsock Drive and now acts as general manager.
Montoursville Creamery employee Brian Fredo scoops ice cream at the Broad Street shop.
Brian took an interest in the business, found the location, and used his commercial design degree to transform the one-time barber shop into a modern take on an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. He now runs the day-to-day operations.
Since Montoursville Creamery has no website, the business relies on word of mouth of the customers.
"The business is good," Brian said. "The community is really supportive. We get a lot of repeat business and new business. Now we just need the weather to cooperate."
342 Broad St.
Mon. to Sat. - 4 to 10 p.m.
The shop is open 4 to 10 p.m. and serves between 24 to 30 Hershey's Super Premium hand-dipped ice cream. They have cones, dishes, sundaes, banana splits, floats, milkshakes, Italian ice, and homemade waffle cones and bowls.
The current top three flavors are Peanut Butter Caramel Cookie Dough, Superman (three fruity flavors mixed together: strawberry, banana and blue moon) and Cappuccino Crunch. They also serve traditional banana splits with Hershey's hand-dipped ice cream.
On rainy days, customers receive a free extra scoop of ice cream with a purchase of small or large cone or bowl. There are also daily and weekly specials that people have to visit to find out about.
Customers can choose from the shop's sundaes or make their own with any flavor of ice cream, any two toppings, such as syrup, candy and cookie flavors, whipped cream and a cherry.
For those with allergies, Montoursville Creamy takes necessary precautions.
"We have no sugar-added and plain flavors available," Brian said. "90 percent of our ice cream is gluten-free."
There is plenty of free parking in the municipal parking lot on the left and off-street parking on the left.
Customers can sit inside the air-conditioned building at tables with stereos for the radio, sit at the tables and chairs outside, or in a "park" next to the business.
Montoursville Creamery does birthday parties, sport team gatherings, and special occasions of any size for on- or off-premises.
