Lycoming College named Chris Monfiletto its acting director of athletics on Thursday, effective immediately.
Monfiletto, who will also continue as Lycoming football's offensive coordinator, was chosen from a pool of 5 finalists, the school said. He replaces Scott Kennell, who left earlier this summer after 3 years for the athletic director's spot at Penn College.
A permanent replacement is expected before the end of the upominh academic year. Monfiletto and the athletic department work under Sue Gaylor, Lycoming's Vice President for Administration and Planning.
"I am very excited and I would like to thank President Dr. James Douthat and Dr. Gaylor for this opportunity," Monfiletto said in a statement. "Lycoming is a unique place, where we have almost 1,400 students and 17 athletic programs and nearly a quarter of our student body is involved in intercollegiate athletics. I see the athletic department as a reflection of the greater institution and I look forward to working with everyone on campus to facilitate an athletic program that we can be very proud of."
Monfiletto, who completed a master's degree in athletic administration from Ohio University in June, has served in a variety of roles at different institutions, including working in admissions and financial aid, as a guidance counselor, a history teacher and a residence life director. He has also served as a head and assistant football coach as well as a recruiting coordinator.
"I am delighted that Chris Monfiletto has agreed to step into the Acting Director of Athletics position," said Douthat in a statement. "He has the experience, confidence and skills to do a great job for the athletic department and for our student-athletes. Chris has held impressive leadership roles at several colleges and preparatory schools and is well prepared to take on the responsibilities of the athletic director. Like his predecessor, Scott Kennell, he will lead a program steeped in a strong heritage of caring and long-serving administrators such as David Busey, Dutch Burch and Frank Girardi."
Monfiletto came to Lycoming as the football team's passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2010. He immediately helped the team's offense average nearly 1.3 more yards per play than in 2009 and earned a promotion to offensive coordinator at the end of the season.
Along the way, Monfiletto helped mentor first-year quarterback Zach Klinger while the Warriors cut their turnovers in half and scored 3.9 more points per game. Monfiletto also coached All-MAC first team selection Ryan Wagaman at wide receiver while helping the team finish above .500 for the second time in three years.
"I have had the great fortune of knowing Chris for 11 years, first as a student-athlete and then as a friend and a co-worker," Lycoming head football Mike Clark said. "Chris is an outstanding choice to be our director of athletics. He is intelligent and energetic. I look forward to working with him to help him fulfill his goals for the entire athletic department."
Before Lycoming, Monfiletto was an assistant football coach and history teacher at his high school alma mater, The Hun School in 2004-05, a running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at his undergraduate alma mater Davidson (N.C.) from 2005-07, and then a high school head coach, assistant director of admissions and financial aid, and a guidance counselor at Western Reserve Academy (Ohio) from 2008-10.
He led his team to a 6-3 record in 2008 while installing a West Coast offense. He then maintained a $3.6 million financial aid budget at Western Reserve.
Monfiletto played under Clark, then an assistant at Davidson, where he was team captain and earned four letters. He now lives in Williamsport and will marry Emily Palmer on July 16.
