PENNSDALE - The Penn State Cooperative Extension will be hold a "Dining with Diabetes" series of classes from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 at the Life Center at the Lycoming Mall.
A follow-up class will be announced at a later date.
"Dining with Diabetes" is a program for adults with diabetes and their families. Classes are offered weekly for four weeks with a three-month follow-up class.
Registration is required due to space limitations and must be made by Sept. 30. The registration fee is required and a limited number of scholarships are available. Often, a non-diabetic spouse will attend in order to support their diabetic partner. This participation is welcome.
Participants will learn how to prepare meals that are healthy, simple and taste good. Recipes will be demonstrated and participants will have the opportunity to help prepare and taste each one.
Participants also will learn up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning and exercise as well as how to understand common diabetes-related medical tests. Recipes and handouts will be given to each participant. In addition, attendees will receive other gifts such as pedometers, exercise DVDs, exercise bands and other helpful tools for managing diabetes.
Diabetes is a very serious and costly disease, but research has shown that those who learn to manage their blood glucose (sugar) levels, eat healthy, and exercise regularly can lower their risk of complications and lead a healthier and more productive life.
Vicki Lewis, extension educator and county extension director, said that "this program is not intended to replace diabetes education delivered by qualified health-care professionals such as certified diabetes educators or registered dietitians. We do not provide individualized meal plans for participants."
Lessons will be taught by Beth Ask, registered dietitian.
"Dining with Diabetes" is sponsored by Penn State Cooperative Extension with partial funding provided by the state Department of Health and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
