Roundup: Avoulou's hat trick helps Millionaires win

Bernard Avoulou scored a hat trick and a pair of new keepers combined for five saves as Williamsport defeated Hazleton, 6-3 on Saturday in boys soccer. Phillip Knower started in goal because of an injury to the regular starter and he played the first half before giving way to Andrew Bruno, the regular junior varsity keeper. Knower, a senior, was playing goal for the first time since his freshman season.

Sullivan County's Doug Shrimp scored twice and had an assist to help put the Griffins past Southern Columbia 4-1.

Loyalsock and Hughesville battled to a 1-1 tie. Eli Weber netted a goal 21 minutes into the match for the Lancers. Daulton Seabridge scored in the 35th minutes to level the score.

Liberty's Alex Strohecker scored three goals as Liberty defeated Towanda, 7-0, at Mansfield University. Anthony Strohecker, Alex's brother, also posted a goal an a assist in the win.

In girls soccer, Montoursville shut out State College 2-0 thanks to goals by both Carly Mill and Mackenzie Ruffing, who also added an assist. Audra Larson had five saves for the Warriors to improve them to 8-0 on the season.

Loyalsock's Asia Ungard and Morgan Chambers each had two assists as the?Lancers spread the ball around in a 4-1 win over Mount Carmel. Cassaundra Soars, Allie Pagana, Angie Cardillo and Courtney Brown all scored. Mount Carmel's goal came when it was down 4-0.

South Williamsport scored 10 goals, led by Carly Engel's three, to down St. John Neumann, 10-2, Saturday afternoon. Jamie Steer added two and Anastasia Laird added two with an assist.

In cross country, Sullivan County junior Kelby Mullen placed ninth at the PIAA Foundation race in Hershey, the site of the PIAA Championships later this year. Mullen finished in 17 minutes, 23 seconds. Northeast Bradford's Sam Williams won the race in 16:33. Lewisburg's Sean Walker (11th) and Iyassu Berhanu (15th) were also a medalists. The Griffins placed 13th as a team and Lewisburg was a spot better in 12th.

The Sullivan County JV team placed 16th.

The Lewisburg girls finished 11th with Caroline Graves leading the team with a 25th-place finish in 21:40.

In sprint football, Josh Harrison ran for 89 yards and scored two touchdowns as Mansfield defeated Princeton, 40-2. The Mountaineers finished with 322 rushing yards. Junior Troy Taylor set a new school-record with three interceptions.

Max Eberhardt headed in a goal in the 70th minute as University of Rochester defeated Lycoming, 1-0. Lycoming failed to put a shot on goal in the loss.

Lycoming's women's soccer team fell on the road at FDU-Florham 4-0 to drop the Warriors to 1-6 overall. Claire Donohue led the Devils with two goals. Junior Jennifer Basch made eight saves for Lycoming.

In college cross country, Lycoming's Michelle Herman finished 14th at the Messiah College Invitational. Freshman Alanna Cimerol added a career-best time of 27 minutes, 22.10 seconds and finished 27th.

Lock Haven finished second overall at the LHU Invite at the West Branch Cross Country Course. Senior Mitch Miller led the Bald Eagles with a fifth overall finish in a time of 26:18.

The Lock Haven women's cross country behind a Lindsey Lambert's first place finish of 22:09.30.

In college field hockey, sophomores Taryn Schawillie and Brianna Velepec scored goals, but Mansfield fell, 10-2, to No. 3 Shippensburg.

Lock Haven overcame an early Caitlin Hickey goal to defeat Georgetown, 3-1, in women's field hockey.
